Why was Reagan able to say "we can't cut and run" & then cut and run..Why can't Bush?

On Feb. 3, [after the Marine Barracks Bombing] Reagan had told the Wall Street Journal, in an exclusive interview, "As long as there is a chance for peace, the mission remains the same. If we get out, that means the end of Lebanon." In a barb directed at House Speaker Thomas P. "Tip" O'Neill Jr. (D, Mass), Reagan had said, "He may be ready to surrender, but I'm not."

The next day, in his weekly radio address, Reagan had said the dangers of the U.S. mission in Lebanon were "no reason to cut and run." "If we do," Reagan had added, "we'll be sending one signal to terrorists everywhere: They can gain by waging war against innocent people."

^^^

If Reagan was able to reverse his word, why can't Bush?

Reagan had plans to launch a retaliation attack, but even called that off...instead he cut and run...the world is still spinning

I doubt CNN was faking audio, they may have taken it out of context but I doubt they went so far as to fake it. I"ll check it out thanks

Because this oil in the region specifically, is REQUIRED to make our massive military machines keep chugging along. We put Saddamn there years ago just for this purpose. America has spent too much time and money in the region to leave, we literally cannot "Cut & Run".

Such would be unthinkable for our various war-mongering planners. It's equivalent to military suicide.

Because we learned from that mistake. It shows weakness.

Why don't you ask Bin Laden why us cutting and running is a great idea? We have a reputation of getting beat up a little and running away. (Somalia, Lebanon) Then when we do stay an extended amount of time, we aren't showing much there either. (Iraq, Korea, Vietnam.)

Even Osama Bin Laden himself has been quoted as saying that America's failed 1993 mission in Somalia was an important example of how al Qaeda could defeat the United States. In an Oct. 21, 2001, statement broadcast by the Arabic-language Al Jazeera network and shown on CNN, bin Laden said three weeks before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, "Our brothers with Somali mujahideen and God's power fought the Americans. God granted them victory. America exited dragging its tail in failure, defeat and ruin." President Clinton, badly shaken by "Blackhawk Down" in 1993, ordered total withdrawal.

I just figured since Reagan was the great example, and most conservatives believe he didn't live up to him...that he would take a tip from the Gipper and cut and run after saying he wouldn't

Could you give a link about ME oil being required by various mUS military machines please.

Moving On

The coalition cant cut & run not just coz if the signal this would send about the limits of US power but also because the risk of any ensuing civil war escalating to a regional conflict is immense.

Admittedly this is hypothitical & I'm a pessimist but it surely is a very real, huge & obvious risk?

The signal of a lack of US resolve would not just be to jihadist terrorists BTW but also to everyone else, ..., China would be just one instance.

The failure of the coalition peoples to realise the consequences of PNAC strategy & the failure by PNAC to communicate it effectively really p*sses me off.

Their strategy is one that has totally committed the US, ..., failure to realise this seriously damages its chances of success. The cost of failure is potentially truely astronomical, not just coz it may enbolden jihadists but because as it has used destabilisation as a tool.

Personally, I suspect that PNAC deliberately choose this strategy precisely because it was one of total committment in order for it to survive multiple election cycles.

edit: b2w, ..., theres always one isnt there? alway one
