I graduated with no debt, no loans, no parental help. I worked at UPS and they paid $2k/semester, I worked as an RA for free room/board, I worked between high school and college (took time off), I worked summers.......... sure it sucked, but I never took a loan.

College is available to anyone who wants to work for it.

Education should be free. I would prefer my taxes go to shit like that so we don't have so many ignorant people in this country.

I worked at bby through school. Worked full time carried a full load and made it with zero debt, zero loans, my dad and my grandpa gave me a total of 3grand while in school.

I think its people that work their ass off through school that truly get the shaft.

What about screwups who go to college for a year or two to party and then drop out? I don't mind so much about my money going to people who take advantage of educational opportunities, but I would be pissed if I paid for bums to party for a few years without recourse.

I think too many people go to 4 year college these days anyway. Free school might encourage even more people to go and incentivize colleges to come up with more worthless degrees.

Increasing federal aid and decreasing interest rates doesn't mean you'll be saving up for others. Quit being so melodramatic.

They drop out, they pay a penalty.. even so much as the grant becomes a loan. We're something like 14th in education in the nation. Not enough people are going to college these days.

If increasing federal aid translates to increased taxes, he has a good point.

I worked 25 hours a week telemarketing. I made my $200 a month car payment, as i needed a reliable car because the drive home was about an hour each way and needed something other than a shit box. So my car was 10k. I probably took home $600 a month that i used for food, car payment, insurance, gas, etc. That pretty much maxed myself out. My parents covered about 1/3rd of school and the rest was on loans. I started off with about 22,000 in student loans and paid them down to about 11,000. I just took another $10,300 out last year or so to use to pay for my 2nd degree. Last wednesday I completed all the required courses. I have 3 electives to do and I am done. I still owe $1570 for those three courses and I am deciding whether to write a check or put it on credit as well. The interest is cheap now, and I think i'd rather send 3x500 payments than one 1500 payment, just in case something happens and i need money.

I don't think sending masses off to institutes of higher learning is going to solve any problems re general education. That's a problem that needs to be sorted out at the high school level at the latest, elementary would be better.

I'm not being melodramatic. Where is this federal aid coming from? Where is this guaranteed decreased interest rate coming from?

And if they can squeeze some money out of some other part of the budget to make this happen without my taxes going up, WHY HAVEN'T THEY INSTEAD GIVEN ME MY MONEY BACK?!?!

There's enough pork fat to cut before increasing taxes.

The double edged sword with "rewarding failure" is there are some people who actually use the money well. Some of those in poverty are very deserving of these grants and it is a way out of poverty for a lot of people. They are able to get a 2nd level education and get a good paying job. They don't remain on the welfare tit like their parents were, etc. Just getting rid of help is foolish in my opinion.

I think the measure of how successful our country is should be based on the population as a whole, not what the DOW did this week. Poverty rates, literacy rates, college graduate rates, employment rate, type of employment, etc. All need to be factored in. Poverty in this country is significantly better than any other country, but that is only because of the systems we have in place today. Some of the poorest people in our country would be considered rich in some african nations. That does not mean just because it is shit some place else we should not worry about it.

Education is a critical component to being middle class today since most of our better paying skilled labor is no longer done here. Those breaks and assistance need to be there to improve our country.

So he gave me $800 but there's still enough pork to fund this? Then $800 wasn't all I should have gotten.

going on your point, you seem to not want to have federal aid for school at all.
Way to read into my posts what you want to read. There are at least 4 options...

1. keep it how it is
2. increase aid
3. decrease aid
4. get rid of aid completely

I only mentioned one of those. How did me talking about not increasing aid suddenly jump to me not wanting any aid?

1) doesn't come close to paying for school. see my first post.
2) able to be done by cutting other programs.. even with oversight. ($10b anyone?)
3) bad idea
4) even worse than 3.

I have read your posts, however you're beginning to sound like TKG: in that you want to pay as little as possible because if you have to pay an extra $3 per year in taxes
