| I don't know if some of you guys realize this, but when celebrities add shit like that in their contract with a venue, the cost is taken out of their pay, not the venue's. The only time this isn't the case is when it's done for charity/free, in which case if they maintain those rider requests, the NPO or whoever must pay for those things. That's a good thing to know if any of you ever work for an NPO and get a charity performance or speaker, because "for charity" doesn't mean "100% free." But most of the time "for charity" just means "for reduced price." My father does a lot of stuff with the Red Cross and once a year puts on a concert where the proceeds go toward his Red Cross division. He does a good job, putting on the highest grossing charity event in the state every year (eg., every year he's done it brings in more money than the previous year and more money than any other single event in the state of Georgia for the Red Cross). And when these artists come in, they might normally charge $80k, but for charity lower it to $20k. At any rate, it's something that has to be thought about in those cases if any of you do something similar | ||||

They were pissed because there were provisions in their contract that were being ignored by the manager and/or the venues that hosted them. So when the contract was re-written they included that M&M thing to see if anyone was going to read it. They didn't. The M&Ms provision was included in Van Halen's contracts not as an act of caprice, but because it served a practical purpose: to provide an easy way of determining whether the technical specifications of the contract had been thoroughly read (and complied with). As for the Van Halen Myth is was in my link but I don't buy this lame excuse for a minute. Every venue that is not some "hole in the wall" shit house is worried about safty, equipment, and insurance issues. These things are taken care of. Van Halen was not the first bad with huge stage productions. Give me a fucking break! It has nothing to do with M&M's in the fine print of a contract. I would not want people on a jury who buy every pathetic justification they read as truth! Van Halen has a long history of being spoiled brats. So what? It goes with that kind of fame......

Fuck that. Their stage sank and ruined the floor because the venue didn't read the contract. They blew out power in the whole building because the venue didn't read the contract. I'm not saying VH aren't a bunch of babies, but if the people are going to get contracts and not read them then fuck them for what follows.

It's the one-offs that are so interesting though. The M&M thing or superflous amounts of flowers like Puff Daddy... those aren't the norm. It's always the most flamboyant ones that require these weird things.
