WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Family detention centers for illegal immigrants and asylum seekers in the United States are like prisons, where residents face harsh discipline and lack adequate health care, two advocacy groups said on Thursday.

The Women's Commission for Refugee Women & Children and the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service surveyed facilities in Texas and Pennsylvania that can hold up to 600. Most of those held there are mothers and children.

"(The) Homeland Security (Department) has to look for alternative models," said Michelle Brane, director of the Women's Commission. "Families should not be split or put in something that looks like a prison."

Why not?! They very likely did something illegal or are being held in US custody. They need to be held in a prison environment to keep them from fleeing. That's the whole point of incarceration...

I don't understand what people want. What's the alternative to this? Give them all suites at the Marriot and let them roam the nation unchecked and unaccounted for? They need to be incarcerated and watched. That means they need to be in a prison like atmosphere. If anything it's a shame it "looks like a prison" and isn't a real prison. There should be very little difference between the two.

But they said it also should be closed and alternative ways found to supervise immigrants while they await proceedings, such as using electronic monitoring bracelets, for example.

"We should not be treating immigrant families who have not committed a crime like criminals, particularly children," said Ralston Deffenbaugh, president of the Lutheran group in Baltimore.

Unless they're here for asylum (which they need to be supervised and protected) they did commit a crime. We're not doing enough to round up illegals in this country as it is. When we finally do something I'm not ok with giving them a stupid bracelet. I would be ok with taking the people out who are just looking for asylum and having a smaller program for them. But regardless of this article's bias, I have no remorse for the illegals.

They can't even bring themselves to use the word "illegal" and admit these people are commiting crimes when they come here. I find it hard to take any of this activism seriously when they are that dishonest.
