Al Gore used 221,000 KwH last year

Wow, just insanity

How does he use 20x what the average american uses at ONE of his five houses and still have the nerve to talk to us about global warming? He zips around on private jets...what am I missing here?

I'll have to look up my usage last year when I get home but I think I'm right around 12000KwH/yr and I have a pool and a hot tub...I did knock off about 2000KwH but switching all our lights to low energy flourescents though they've already paid for themselves.

rofl. funniest line on this board to date.

don't know, but more details would be nice...

He zips around on private jets...what am I missing here?
i view this under the 'spending some to gain some' philosophy. this would apply if the amount of energy saved by people he speaks to is greater than the amount he spends traveling to speak. i have no idea which is greater, but it would suck if the latter were greater than the former.

Ok, now that is a fair point, spending some to gain some is relevant IMO when it comes to spending money on jet travel to speak to 500, 1000 or 10,000 people on the topic of global warming. But he still pisses that all away with his own carelessness/hypocrisy on the energy consumption/usage/pollution issue on a personal scale.

Olbermann had a thing on this tonight. Though he uses a lot of energy it is all from alternative (green) sources such as wind and he pays extra for each kwh he uses because it comes from "green" sources.

Gore just switched to wind power 3 months ago....why do you think he did that? Because the backlash he kne whe was going to get. Wind Power has been available in his area since 2002 and he didn't want to pay the "extra"

He and his family make an actual effort to offset their carbon footprint, to the point where they're considered carbon neutral. I don't think you can ask more of anyone else, and I don't believe he has.

The movie has suggestions that people can take which wont negatively impact their lives, diff types of bulbs, recycling, etc.. he's not saying walk 50 miles to work and live in a one room shack lit by a LED keychain

It's talking about everyone making small, easy changes that can have a big impact when combined, not everyone making drastic and unbearable changes..

As a former Vice President he (like every former big-wig) is obviously going to have a larger residence, and an entourage, and he's going to need to travel. His home has two offices that he and his wife work out of, and they drive a hybrid, use green energy, have flourescent lightbulbs, purchase offsets, etc.. I'm sure that's far more than most people do, so seems like a huge, convenient whinefest about nothing to me.

Yeah Al Gore purchases carbon credits which in the real world DO NOTHING! It's a feel good fuzzy so he can point and say "see, look what I'm doing" fact is he's using 221,000 KwH each year at ONE residence! You'd think if he were serious about this he'd bulldoze much of his mansion and sell off his other properties to cut that energy usage back to a more reasonable amount. Hell 60,000KwH would power a 9000sq ft green home along with a pool, hot tub, sauna etc.
