More good news in Iraq

You just said they don't want us to leave. That's the tenth time today I've heard that. I've gotta go back to the states and do a newscast that every night has another politician or twelve of them saying 'We have got to get out of that godforsaken place.'

...

Now with us today Mr. Engel who went also went out with our troops today in the usually rough Sadr City neighborhood.
____

Thank you very much Brian, for the last several years Sadr City has been one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in all of Baghdad. COMPLETELY out of government control. Today I went in with US forces who are trying to TAKE IT BACK.

The last time US troops entered this Shite slum of two million two and a half years ago they battled the Shia militia and the Madhi army for weeks. What the soldiers found today surprised them. No resistance. The Madhi army in Sadr City seems to have just faded away. Its fighters no longer patrol its streets. They've even taken down their propaganda posters.

In Sadr City instead today, brisk traffic, families out and children playing. "Finally they feel security. It's better," said a man who brought his daughter outside to see the US soldiers. US military officials say in the past few weeks violence in the Sadr City area is way down. In December there were 254 murders, 440 total attacks. In Februrary just 19 murders, 91 total attacks.

The US military officials aren't stupid. They know the Madhi Army is playing possum. But, they're hoping if they bring security and freedom the people will like it and won't allow the Madhi forces back in.
MSNBC Video

Finally these stories are getting aired. It only took a few years. This is good news in Iraq. The Iraqis in some of the worst areas are getting a taste of freedom and telling the US forces they don't want them to leave.

If this story builds, it will be interesting how and if it affects government policy.

Sadr City is stable because they were finally asked to lay down their arms for the surge duration.

I'm sorry, I don't understand your reasoning.

The Sadrists, insurgents by their own accord, are not fighting at the moment simply because we 'asked them to lay down their arms' during the US surge?!!!

Does that method work with ALL enemies?

This site has some really cool videos of our troops in action. Some are very graphic warning.

I was waiting for someone to come in here and completely ignore the premise of the post to say this. Yes, even Fox takes their shots at Bush from time to time... back on topic...

being liberals and all, wouldn't their agenda tell them not to report this story?

edit: you know... because of their disdain for the military

Al Sadr told them to co-operate I believe. I think that is what he was saying.

That must mean the news is overwhelmingly good in order to force them to report it

It's possible they held off for as long as possible, but realized they just couldn't spin it any other way.

Well isn't that nice of him. I wonder why he told them that? Could it be that he thought the surge would have ultimately been effective and he would be fighting a losing battle?

There have been limited reports that Iraq was getting safer for a while now from some sources. The mainstream media switched gears to Anna Nicole during this time... Now it's like the elephant under the rug that nobody was talking about.

I don't understand why we can't watch/read a positive story about Iraq without making it a partisan issue or even acknowledging the positive events.

This isn't a partisan issue..

Over 100+ Iraqis were killed today, and 9+ US Soldiers...which information do you think we should air tonight if we only have time for one story on Iraq? What I just said or what you posted?

My crazy idea would be to air them both We have time for Anna this long, why not have time for our military and servicemen in Iraq.
