News to me* & I went to one of the last schools that had an officially sanctioned fagging system, ..., fortunately I didnt start till i was too old to fag & never attained sufficient status to be entitled to one

its like a batman in the military, or a maid etc.
Fags are just younger kids, not by any means freshmen or newbies etc

Best example is from the film 'If', (very small portions of which were filmed at the establishment in question)
"Binns Minor!, Go & warm me a lavatory seat!"

Of course, the arrival of any young sep caused much amusement as housemasters publically announced "Diamond Cross you'll be the sixth form corridor fag this term" etc

Of course perhaps I misunderstand the term 'freshmen' anyway

My fiancee is from England and she occasionally refers to cigarettes as fags. I'll have to ask her about the freshmen.

We used to call each other fags in grade school sometimes and then when the kid would chase after you you would scream "Fantastic American Great! Fantastic American Great!" as we ran away.

I have a buddy with the last name Gann. He always jokes about how he is going to name his first son Franklin Allen Gann.

I asked my fiancee about fag in England and she said it's a cigarette (which we all knew) or it's also a term they use for meatballs. Therefore it's common to see someone over there order fags and mash (meatballs and mashed potatos) of fags and chips (meatballs and french fries).

As far as a reference to freshmen she's never heard of it.
