No, as historians we reflect on books like Gates of Fire, we don't look for nonexistent social or political innuendos in 8 year old comic books.

yeah I must have missed the memo, and besides it was a movie based on a graphic novel...not a random X-Men comic book
Amazon.com: 300: Books: Frank Miller

But there's not need to reflect.

It was a comic book movie.

I reflected on Smokin Aces. As a scientist, it's what I do.

I was talking about this with some friends and the head of the history department the other day, and he said essentially the same thing about the inaccuracies in it. I think anyone who's a serious historian has a hard time putting historical inaccuracies aside when watching a movie about a subject like this.

Doesn't mean it's not enjoyable from an entertainment standpoint though

When you have history as a career it's not pompous to be more interested in the historical accuracies of a movie than most people

I'd wager the same is true for the great majority of people who see a movie about something they spend their lives doing (or have as a very serious hobby)

Oh come on, I watch movies that have science in them all the time. I don't sit there and act like 'that's impossible'.

I sit back and say 'wow, awesome'.

Also, don't take our minor pokes at Thorgrim too seriously. After alll, this is The Speakeasy, so take it easy!

What university do you teach at? What courses are you teaching this semester? What do have you had published?

I guess as a person 12 units away from his history BA I'm not cool enough to care about a comic books historical representation. Good thing I've read Herodotus and I know better.

I can only imagine what kind of lame kind of comments coming from geologist about The Core.

Unlike say, Amityville Horror, or TCM or even Breaveheart, I don't think that anywhere this movie even claimed to be based on historical events. Though out all the advertisements I never once heard reference to the Battle of Thermopylae. It's not even said in the movie.

So it seems a Canadian Prof is offering his own personal critique of the historical accuracy.

I wrote him an email:

Professor Lytle,

I wanted to make a point concerning your recent article TheStar.com - artsentertainment - Sparta? No. This is madness

With all due respect, how important is the historical accuracy of a comic book?

I do hope you were asked to provide a perspective as an expert in the relevant history, and not offering up a historical critique of a comic book. That would most certainly be silly.

Regards,

Eric

since we're up and talking about the accuracy of 300, lets take a moment to do the same to other comic books.

spider man: getting bit by a radioactive spider will turn you into a spider-like superhero.

superman: there is a planet called krypton, which is the only place where a substance is found that can harm the inhabitants of the same planet.

Dare Devil: blind people can affect society in a positive way

Xmen: it is possible to be a mutant in a way where you can shoot lasers from your eyes, or affect the weather whenever you feel like it.

clearly children have been getting their education mixed up with their entertainment, so it's completely reasonable for historians to get up in arms about the historical inaccuracies in 300.

Holy formatting, batman.. why all the font and color tags?

I never said I was a history professor, not sure where you got that idea? And even if I was I'm not sure how what someone has published is relevant to looking at a movie about a historical event and saying "Wow there's a lot of inaccuracies in this movie"

You seem to be taking the idea that someone who has history as their profession might have a hard time putting aside everything wrong with the movie way too seriously, but whatever I suppose

I'm not suggesting it was claimed to be based on historical events, but the fact that it's about the battle means people interested in history are going to compare it.. and those conversations are already taking place for better or worse

Nothing shows up with I qoute myself, looks like error on your end.

You said you talked to the head of the history department....

Yes ,someone who has history as there profession but can't get past the historical inacuracy of a comic book has a problem, most likely many.
