Body Mass Index (BMI) on school report cards???

The New York legislature is considering requiring a students Body Mass Index to be on report cards.

Basically I find this to be unacceptable. It is none of the governments business or the school's what a student weighs and why. If they want to put the information on the students yearly physical and give suggestions that is OK, thats the point of the physical. But to put it on a report card to "judge" the student just seems to me.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Is this something that should be required?

New York is tumbling fast down the drain. I guess if you live in New York it automatically means that you are too stupid to make your own choices and live your life how you see fit.

Aren't they already judged by their physical abilities in gym? How is this different?

In my gym class, if you couldn't move up in how much you could lift, you got a lower grade.

That is not the same as how fat you are on a permanent record. And some of the gym teachers I knew would also factor how hard you tried, improved, ect...

We also had health class and covered the food groups, eating right, exercise, ect... Marking kids by body mass? More Nanny State B.S. and the only good thing is New York thought of it before some Idiot in California. We have enough National Embarrassment!

An A in gym class = show up, wear your uniform, and participate. And even then the three requirements were slack.

Not in my school.

That would get you a C. Only a few people in each class got A+'s.

Massachusetts sent a letter home to warn of the dangers of being overweight...but get this, they only sent it to the fat kids, *AND* they couldn't afford to mail them SO THEY CALLED THE FAT KIDS TO THE OFFICE and handed them out.

So in front of all their friends someone in the school basically said "sally, jimmy, mary, billy, you're fat. Please come to the office and get your letter."

I didn't believe it but my wife said her co-worker's daughter got one and refused to go back to school the next day.

try "get fatter".

I really need to start only drinking at strip clubs...that way I'll only ever have one $16 and be too angry to drink any more. I'd lose weight then!!

were the grades based on athletic ability, or effort? I think by the time I was in school all you had to do was make an honest effort in the phys stuff, and do decently on the paper tests we had.

Though I dont think it is something that should be on a report card, I think an alternative I would support is writing it on a progress report. Halfway through the quarter we would get papers that were not official grades that parents had to sign and we would return them. They had a comments section on them for the teacher to put some brief feedback. I could see putting a BMI on something like that in the comments section for a gym class because it can be related to the course.

As far as calling them to the office to get their 'you are fat' letter, I dont have a problem with that as long as they do not have a medical condition that is contributing to their fatness. This country is out of control with fat people and it is part of the reason our healthcare is ridiculous. Diabetes, heart disease, cancers, strokes, etc, all start to come out when someone is a complete fat ass. Being fat is the number 1 killer next to cigarettes. I am not saying to legislate what we eat or smoke, but some times a little public humiliation goes a long way. I am not going to spare their feelings because they might get embarassed by being a lard ass.

Effort could get you to a B at most. You had to have ability to get an A.
