Top US general 'regrets' anti-gay comment - Financial Times - MSNBC.com

"Top US general 'regrets' anti-gay comment"

General Peter Pace, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Tuesday attempted to deflect criticism of his comments that homosexuality was "immoral" by saying his remarks reflected only his personal opinion.

Gen Pace stirred controversy by telling the Chicago Tribune that the military should not condone immoral acts, such as homosexual relations.
This story has been popping its head up every few days lately and it really bothers me.

He did not suggest gays are inferior or should be discriminated against, he just believes that homesexual acts are immoral. Since when is this a cause for a public outcry?

This type of sentiment will have no effect on his job performance because he doesn't seem to have any problem with people being gay, and the don't ask don't tell policy insulates him from knowledge that would allow this to affect any decisions anyway.

The guy makes a comment suggesting he believes homosexual acts are immoral and he is getting pushed around for it. I think he should be entitled to his personal opinion and the pressure on him is ridiculous. I usually don't like the "liberal conspiracy"-type of label, but this seems to fit the bill. If you announce a personal view that isn't in perfect harmony with the "liberal conspiracy", you can expect to be stoned publicly.

The marketplace of ideas is being slowly killed off, and it's a sad, sad thing.

I am not sure if i would be offended, if i was gay, that he called my private sex moments immoral.

In the context of which he said it he basically said they should not allow gays in the military. That is discriminating against those who want to serve because of their private sexual preferences...something that i find ridiculously silly.

As a raised catholic I was taught to believe that all you protestants are going to burn in hell for being heretics

If I was ever head of the military, I wouldn't have shared my moral views

He's a public official at the head of the military, if he wants to call people under him immoral, that's crossing the line as a public official

Well I think that was the problem with his interview. He's entitled to voice his personal opinion but it needs to be just that personal opinion. I did not like the way he tried to tie his personal moral beliefs to government policy, I agree that is crossing the line.

it's nothing to do with his personal opinions per se, it has to do with his opinions when commenting on military policy.
