Looks like we aren't the first with the story:

So far, so good. But how Gore buys his "carbon offsets," as revealed by The Tennessean raises serious questions. According to the newspaper's report, Gore's spokesperson said Gore buys his carbon offsets through Generation Investment Management:

Gore helped found Generation Investment Management, through which he and others pay for offsets. The firm invests the money in solar, wind and other projects that reduce energy consumption around the globe, she said...

Gore is chairman of the firm and, presumably, draws an income or will make money as its investments prosper. In other words, he "buys" his "carbon offsets" from himself, through a transaction designed to boost his own investments and return a profit to himself. To be blunt, Gore doesn't buy "carbon offsets" through Generation Investment Management - he buys stocks.

And it is not clear at all that Gore's stock purchases - excuse me, "carbon offsets" purchases - actually help reduce the use of carbon-based energy at all, while the gas lanterns and other carbon-based energy burners at his house continue to burn carbon-based fuels and pump carbon emissions - a/k/a/ "greenhouse gases" - into the atmosphere.

Lots of other links on google as well. Strange this is the first we have heard of it though.

anecdotal is all that is neccesary. If Staples purchases a bunch of solar panels for their dist center, that can be a carbon offset.

the key is this reporter does not have the form 990 disclosing actually what they invest in...which is posted on here...but good find...perhaps we should shoot the file to that reporter, as he is on the right track...

last I checked the firms (with the exception of GE only 10$ of fund, yes 10% is roughly $20 Million) which one could hardly pretend to twist this as an investment in "green", but merely an investment..which is a good investment...again...issue is not around investments... it is about deception...or three card monty...

deception?

the form is public information. The information you "found" I stumbled upon while googling the corporation which is what I am very sure is the same method you found it with.

Any smart person who is involved in trading or contributing to that fund would know what the money is going into. Anyone can see what the money is going into. Gore has actively promoted the company.

I see people making a mountain out of a molehill, jumping on something that's so minor that it's not really worth a mention.

seriously, you all are like a pack of rabid dogs

you are not even being intellectually honest...

Cheney is the current VP, Bush is the current President.

again, Gore is a former VP, he's no longer a public servant.

for me to say you're comparing apples to oranges would be a total and complete understatement.

what?

honestly, what the hell are you saying?

Why the hell would I want a private citizen to be held to Senate oversight, disclosure, or resignations?

are you now comparing this to the Gonzales scandal? honestly?

omg there are so many reaches and deaperate attempts to latch on to something I'm sad for you. I honestly pity that you're trying to hard.

NO, no sir I do not hold a VP and President to the same standards as a regular citizen. They are public servants and there needs to be oversight and disclosure.

however, Gore served and is no longer a public servant. So no.

oh my god... I respected you quite a bit until this thread.

honestly I'm at a complete loss for words.

good diversion...not even remotely close to point I was making...but you are diverting this thread...

FWIW, had no intention of connecting to gonzales...you are the one that made the tie to public office and not...you are the one that said he should not be held to standards of normal ethics...

last I knew deception was deception...simple fact....no other intended meanings...

That is one of the major parts of carbon offsetting. And actually does something compared to the idea of "ohh I will plant some trees"
