What's interesting is that people (in general) seem to take a side against this kid based on their feelings about it not being a valid religion.

It's a fine line really, because what constitutes something going "too far" in the name of religion? Being disruptive? You could make all kinds of claims about a Jewish person wearing one of their little caps, or a Muslim person wearing their garbs, etc.. being distracting to the general public who are Christian or whatever.. so where's the line?

the pot case was another attempt at using the religion loophole to do something disruptive/illegal and get away with it.

it's called a "point".

Uh, since when is holding up a banner saying "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" illegal?

It's about freedom of expression and limits on it.

When leeway is given to one religion, that same leeway must be given to all to be consistent, otherwise it's religious discrimination

Now, I see a bunch of stuff in there about religion but I have yet to see one discussed in this thread (except for the yarmulke and "turban" snippets).

Wait!! I have an idea!!!

SWEET!!

My religion, The Church of the Minibike Alter, requires my son to ride his minibike to class and use it as his seat. Keeping him from doing that is preventing him from observing his religion.

Go! Refute my logic.

the bong hits for jesus thing is different. that's not religious based at all, he was on a "school field trip" so to speak and he was encouraging illegal activity during school time. no way do I see that as justified.

No. This thread has very little to do with religion. It mostly has to do with an asshole kid and people struggling to defend his assholio actions

exactly. people are taking this shit too far. there should be a line somewhere. and unfortunately when you create "lines" such as this, someone usually gets the short end of the stick, but this has gotten out of control.

you have to take into account the kids intentions. when did he start wearing his pirate costume? does he wear it all the time, or only at school? does he practice everything else involving this religion or only during school hours.

if he's only doing this at school, he's obviously trying to cause a stir.
