All I will say is that everyone in the military are allowed to have an opinion but that opinion can not be expressed openly in public for a couple of reasons. As an Non Commissioned Officer, my soldiers might hear my opinion and out of loyalty will adopt it, believe it and adhere to it whether I am right or wrong. Opinions can be very dangerous in a war zone. For example, while working a road side check point, a soldier came up to me and asked me was it ok to shoot someone that did not follow his orders during a vehicle search. After being told no, he explained that his NCO told him that we (meaning soldiers) had the right to do whatever it took to get the job done. To me that was his NCO's opinion and not a fact. That young soldier could have gotten in a lot of trouble. Unfortunately deadly force was not properly explained to him prior to working with me, so I made sure to break it down and explain it.

that is true but we (soldiers) are allowed to express those views in limited form. I can talk about my viewpoints and political ideas as long as the conversation is not one that can be twisted to mean it is the view of the military.

What MOS? I ask because our ROE are pretty clear and very well understood and constantly reinforced. That troop should have never been unclear about that in the first place.

About the video, it was made for his folks while he was off duty( as much as you can be off duty in combat zone) and was distributed by himself to the public. Nothing wrong with that at all.

11B, You are exactly right. I was amazed at how some of these young soldiers were not given good instructions on the do's and don'ts.
