lying about the original coordinates is enough......the original coordinates were in iraqi waters, then all the sudden the new ones were in iranian waters. Yeah, right.

And since the iranians has to cross one mile into iraqi waters I'd say that was illegal. And since they captured soldiers who were not in their waters i'd say that was kidnapping.

You can keep defending them all you want but it's not going to change the facts.

iraq and iran agreed to a boundary for their waters in 1975.

the uk soldiers were on the iraqi side in IRAN'S first reported coordinates.

Glad this has been defused.

I think the UK article that this was retaliation for US kidnapping of Iranian diplomats in Iraq is probably more accurate than anything having to do with oil prices or their economy.

I believe we have released several of their diplomats that we kidnapped in the last few days, so I was sort of expecting this result.

But of course this is Iran and they are always wrong about everything since they are evil. We should hurry up and invade before more of their citizens start embracing our culture. We wouldn't want anyone in the ME liking us. Makes it much more difficult to pat ourselves on that back after dropping tons of ordinance on their heads.
Well I think thats a good point and definately can not be ignored but since neither side has released anything official stating the position of the ship/soldiers it is very tough to say.

I think it is quite likely they temporarily crossed into Iranian waters and Iran in normal fashion for them decided to make something of it.

Oh how cute, the release is a 'Easter gift' from Iran to Britain:

TEHRAN, Iran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced that his government would release the detained 15 British sailors and marines Wednesday as an Easter gift to the British people.

On Thursday the 29th of March 2007, during a session of the UN Security Council, Jones Parry, the British ambassador to the UN said; "Iran has modified the parameters of the area where they captured fifteen British sailors in the Gulf (at the mouth of Chatt al-Arab) in order to be able to claim that they were in Iranian waters even though they were in Iraqi waters." Parry said to the press, "

When we published the GPS coordinates of the place where the two boats were located, the coordinates provided by Iran were different but nonetheless corresponded to Iraqi waters
." Then he added, "

It was only when we emphasized that the detention (of the sailors) was inappropriate and in our eyes illegal, that these coordinates were changed by the Iranian government and became coordinates corresponding to Iranian waters
."

Based on Iran's struggles as of late I find it highly likely they've been wanting to do something for awhile to boost oil prices. They've been very outspoken that prices were too low and they were very outspoken about wanting to raise the price of crude. All the economic data shows them struggling especially when oil is below 60/bbl. When it gets into the low 50's Iran is really in a bind, so they drum up a reason to capture a few soldiers and send the western world into a tizzy.

If the Iranians ever came close to our territorial waters, we would be all over them.

They have a right to their sovereignty as much as anyone. We have forces all around their country and a wannabe cowboy giving orders. You can't blame them for acting like this.

if they came a mile from our international water boundary and we boarded their boat and took their soldiers for 2 weeks we wouldn't be right for doing it.

I think the fact that we kidnap Iranian diplomats visiting Iraq, Iran kidnaps UK soldiers, we release Iranian diplomats, they release UK soldiers is much more plausible and backed up by the facts.

If it was about oil though, it wouldn't be the first time a nation has taken hostile actions to protect oil interests, it's something we've been doing in the Middle East for the last 50 years.
