Forget an apology

Forget an apology, it will never happen. I do hope the three young men who were cleared of any charges today win their civil suits I'm sure will soon be filed. I also hope Nyfong (sp?) the original D.A. in this mess is disbared for among other things witholding evidence of their innocence.

Looking back on it now, I believe most of the blame should be placed on the DA
It is mostly the DA's fault. He was the one that kept on going on TV and speaking bad about the team and doing all the things he did to make sure everyone knew he was taking care of it and remember "Vote Nifong!"

But I do blame people for leaping at this and using it as a race/class issue. If lynch mobs were legal those kids would have been strung up. So many people, the DA included, didn't wait for any evidence. Just the seriousness of the charge was enough to convict them. And that is not the way it's supposed to work.

We don’t know exactly what happened that night. Initial DNA tests came back negative, incriminating no one. But something happened on the night of March 13th – something so compelling that Durham District Attorney Michael Nifong was prompted to say, “This case is not going away”. Indeed, he asserts that the lack of DNA evidence "doesn't mean nothing happened. It just means nothing was left behind." The District Attorney is putting the case before a grand jury. And, while unresolved racial, gender and class issues dictate and divide perspectives, these facts are not in dispute.

Black women; white men. A stripper; and a team blowout. The wealthy white athletes – many from prep schools – of Duke; and the working class woman from historically black North Carolina Central. Race and class and sex. What happened? We don’t know for sure because the Duke players are maintaining a code of silence.

The history of white men and black women – the special fantasies and realities of exploitation – goes back to the nation’s beginning and the arrival of slaves from Africa.

But Duke is alas probably no worse than other schools in the way African American women are too often perceived. In the wake of the Duke scandal, black women across the country report on how often they are harassed or treated as simply objects available to hit on by white men.

The Duke scandal should lead colleges across the country to hold searching discussions about racial and sexual stereotypes, exposing the myths that entrap so many. But it shouldn’t take the brutalizing of a mother of two to raise these issues. Justice must be pursued at Duke. But Duke should not be treated as an isolated extreme – but as a goad to probing discussion and concerted action to lift students above the hatreds, the fears and the fantasies that still plague our society.

I promise I didn't plagiarize him when I wrote mine.

I think that White Male and Black female is probably the rarest of all interracial couples

Nifong Apologizes

Duke DA Apologizes to Players
Apr 12 04:06 PM US/Eastern
By AARON BEARD
Associated Press Writer

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - The local prosecutor who charged three Duke lacrosse players with raping a stripper apologized to the athletes Thursday, a day after North Carolina's attorney general dropped the entire case.

"To the extent that I made judgments that ultimately proved to be incorrect, I apologize to the three students that were wrongly accused,"
Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Attorney General Roy Cooper not only dropped all remaining charges against the players Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans, but pronounced them innocent and said they were the victims of Nifong's "tragic rush to accuse." Cooper branded Nifong a "rogue" prosecutor who was guilty of "overreaching."

"I also understand that whenever someone has been wrongly accused, the harm caused by the accusations might not be immediately undone merely by dismissing them," Nifong said. "It is my sincere desire that the actions of Attorney General Cooper will serve to remedy any remaining injury that has resulted from these cases."

Nifong refused to answer any questions after handing the statement to an Associated Press reporter outside his office in Durham.

Seligmann's attorney, Jim Cooney, responded bitterly to the apology.

"You can accept an apology from someone who knows all the facts and simply makes an error," Cooney said. "If a person refuses to know all the facts and then makes a judgment, that's far worse—particularly when that judgment destroys lives."
I understand what Cooney is saying here. How can someone just say "sorry" when they purposely covered up evidence that showed the players were not guilty? If it was an honest mistake, fine. But it wasn't.

I about got into a fight with a guy over this at work yesterday for some reason. He just knew they were guilty, those Duke guys. I pointed out the lack of DNA evidence, yet he swore they must be guilty anyway. He finally conceded to say that he really just hates white Ivy-league students for some reason.

Sad thing is, this guy is white.

but they can.

Prosecutors generally have immunity for what they do inside the courtroom, but experts said that protection probably doesn't cover some of Nifong's more questionable actions in his handling of the case — such as calling the lacrosse players "a bunch of hooligans" in one of several interviews deemed unethical by the state bar.

"I think their chances of success suing Mr. Nifong are reasonably good, despite what we call prosecutorial immunity," said John Banzhaf, a professor at the George Washington University School of Law.

ABC News Asshole

DON'T FEEL TOO SORRY FOR THE DUKIES

The conduct of the lacrosse team of which they were members was not admirable on the night of the incident, to say the least. And there are so many other victims of prosecutorial misconduct in this country who never get the high-priced legal representation and the high-profile, high-minded vindication that it strikes me as just a bit unseemly to heap praise and sympathy on these particular men.

So as we rightly cover the vindication of these young men and focus on the genuine ordeal they have endured, let us also remember a few other things:

They were part of a team that collected $800 to purchase the time of two strippers.

Their team specifically requested at least one white stripper.

During the incident, racial epithets were hurled at the strippers.

Colin Finnerty was charged with assault in Washington, DC, in 2005.

The young men were able to retain a battery of top-flight attorneys, investigators and media strategists.

TerryMoran
This started out as a racial witch hunt. Rich White Kids rape poor black woman. People FREAKED. There were demonstrations at Duke where people had Most Wanted posters of the kids and signs that said they should be castrated. Everyone jumped to help the poor woman and everyone condemned the "hooligans".

So, it ends up the poor black woman is a liar. These boys did nothing. Yet again, because they are white and aren't poor and go to Duke it's really not that bad. We shouldn't feel sorry that they were hunted, threatened, expelled, called rapists, thugs, etc etc. They are white and not poor! They had it made!!!!

The left just makes me sick sometimes.....

The above article continues:
As students of Duke University or other elite institutions, these young men will get on with their privileged lives. There is a very large cushion under them--the one that softens the blows of life for most of those who go to Duke or similar places, and have connections through family, friends and school to all kinds of prospects for success. They are very differently situated in life from, say, the young women of the Rutgers University women's basketball team.
Somehow we're to believe these Duke players who were almost wrongly convicted and were considered guilty before being proven innocent had it much better than those Rutgers basketball players.

They are white, therefore, yes.

I remember Rush Limbaugh saying something once. It never fit more perfectly than now. It was an example of news coverage of the impending end of the Earth.

WSJ: "Giant meteor to hit earth in two days. Judgment day for all!"

Chicago Tribune: "Meteor to hit earth tomorrow. All life as we know it to end"

NY Times: "Meteor to Smash Earth. Minorities likely to be most affected."

So whatever happened to the woman's baby? I take it that it was proven the baby did not belong to one of the Duke players?
