Robot with human-like eyes v. Domo

I just came across this article on Domo the robot developed at MIT.

Presently, Domo can identify objects, reach for them and place them on shelves. Unlike an assembly-line robot, Domo can sense its surroundings using a pair of video cameras for eyes; they are connected to 12 computers. The cameras are built into remarkably human-looking "eyeballs," for a reason, said Domo's developer, Aaron Edsinger.

"I found that, by making them immediately understandable as eyes, it was very easy to read [Domo's] eye-gaze direction, which is important when working with it," Edsinger said. "They also greatly increase people's comfort level with the robot."

This story kinda makes me laugh, because it was just a couple months ago when I came across Domo in the Stata Center when I was over there one day for lunch. Domo was sitting by the wall, available for anyone to interact with it as they went by. I kneeled forward, peered into its eyes, and asked questions, as I was instructed to do. It merely looked at me in bewilderment. I guess the coolest part about it was that it actually looked at me, following me whereever I went. I never responded to any commands though

I saw it being programmed to make choices on the Science Channel. Interesting stuff, this autonomy, especially the emerging technology and [procedural] methods.

It just looked at me strangely when I spoke to it. It didn't seem to work so well

Then again, real people often look at me strangely when I talk to them too. Perhaps it IS right on!
