| Oregon Rep. DeFazio won't run for Senate AP - Democratic Rep. Peter DeFazio (news, bio, voting record) of Oregon said Friday he won't run for the Senate next year, despite overtures from national party leaders. DeFazio said he strongly considered a bid to unseat Republican Sen. Gordon Smith (news, bio, voting record) but decided to stay in the House, where he has served more than 20 years and chairs a Transportation subcommittee. The Democratic Senate Campaign Committee calls Smith one of the most vulnerable GOP incumbents and had said its polling showed DeFazio doing well against him. "This was not an easy decision," DeFazio said. Several other prominent Democrats are believed to be considering challenging Smith, who is seeking his third term.
