KUWAIT CITY - US ally Kuwait is to form an emergency team to draw up contingency plans for any conflict between the United States and Iran, a senior minister said in comments published on Friday.

‘The team ... will devise a comprehensive contingency plan to deal withrisks that may result in case a war breaks out in the Gulf on the back of the rising US military escalation towards Iran,’ State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Faisal Al Hajji told the Al Watan daily.

The cabinet will form the team at its weekly meeting on Sunday, drawing on officials from the defence, interior, oil and health ministries as well as the fire and civil defence departments, Hajji said.

The team is then due to hold its first meeting on Monday.

The Kuwaiti parliament is scheduled to hold a special debate on May 1 on the government’s readiness for any military confrontation between the United States and Iran.

Washington has said that it would prefer to address its concerns about Teheran’s nuclear programme diplomatically but has refused to rule out the option of military action.

It has beefed up its military presence in the Gulf and currently has a second aircraft carrier there for the first time since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Kuwait served as the launchpad for that invasion and remains the main staging point for US-led troops in Iraq.

Around 15,000 US troops are stationed at a series of bases in the emirate, the largest of them at Arifjan, south of Kuwait City near the border with Saudi Arabia.

This doesn't mean anything except that we are certainly giving off the impression we intend to go to war with Iran.

It seems to me that just letting them meet without saying anything could make it seem like we're ok with people thinking we could go to war at any moment.

Personally, it's so bad that we're seen as such worldwide war mongers.

The Iranians could get support and sympathy from the rest of the Arab world, if they could convince Middle eastern countries that the U.S. is about to attack them. There is no telling how many propaganda- like stories are being spread.

If anyone is on the offense here, it's Iran against us and the UK. Supplying and training insurgents and kidnapping soldiers in Iraqi waters, etc.

Saying we're attacking Iran by proxy I think is a bit reversed. I think what we're doing at this point could clearly be considered defense.

We also have plans to attack Iran. We also had vaults filled with unused plans to attack the Soviet Union. Be careful how you use the word "intend."

This thread is about Kuwait thinking that the U.S. is going to attack Iran. And there is a simple way for our government to put away that fear. That is simply for Bush or a high level official to go to Iran and be photographed talking to the Iranian leader.

It makes no sense not to do that. What do we have to lose? He gets all the press in the meantime, scaring the rest of the Middle East.

The man is not even that popular in his own country. But by not talking to him, we make him into a sort of folk-hero.

The only thing preventing them from going full force attack mode on Iraq or nuclear weapons is their fear we'll attack them. Let them be afraid and tread softly.

Ronald Reagan would call the Soviet Union the " Evil Empire " and then visit the Soviet leader as if they were old friends.

By not visiting the Iranian leader, we might appear to Arab country leaders as being afraid to lose something, or afraid of confronting Iran. We need to reassure a country like Kuwait ( somewhat of an ally ) what our intentions are.

Let's face it, no U.S. President has ever refused to talk with a recognized head of a foreign country, because our president thought the man was evil or represented an evil regime.

I'd rather us suck at foreign relations than have Iran more active in Iraq and possessing a nuke right now. If that's sucking, I'll take it. I agree we suck at foreign relations, but not because of this in this instance.

Right, because Iran having a nuke would be the worst possible thing that could happen.

Nukes are like guns: more possession inhibits use.

If we concentrated on our relationships instead of trying infringe on the soverignty of other countries, we wouldn't even be thinking about Iran using a nuke... similarly to how we never thinkg about England using theirs, or any of the other nuclear enabled countries.

You're not getting the point. The Iran/Iraq war in the 80s. We attacked Iran by proxy...that proxy agent was Iraq.
