bush accepts 'purple heart'.

in the wake of all these questions of whether kerry deserved his purple heart for actually fighting in a war, i can imagine these same people will take issue with a draft dodger for accepting one, even if its not 'real'?

COPPERAS COVE – History will be made today when Copperas Cove resident Bill Thomas and his wife, Georgia, present President George W. Bush with a Purple Heart at the Oval Office.

Thomas said he and his wife came up with the unprecedented idea to present the president with the Purple Heart over breakfast one morning a few months ago as they discussed the verbal attacks, both foreign and domestic, the commander in chief has withstood during his time in office.

"We feel like emotional wounds and scars are as hard to carry as physical wounds," Thomas said.

The medal was awarded to Thomas on Dec. 18, 1965, following injuries he sustained while serving in heavy combat with the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.

given his lack of service record, and the shite he has led us into in iraq, with soldiers dying everyday, i'm left to wonder how he can accept it.

As much as I can respect the guy for his service, this idea of his is beyond retarded. While he was being shot earning his purple heart, GW had other things to do.

And on the other hand, a guy who won a medal wants to give it to Bush. What kind of slap in the face for the guy would it be if he refused to accept it?

Weird, but it's not like the President is being honored with one from the government; it's a gift from someone who earned one himself

Can you really compare the two?

If graciously declined, it would not be a slap in the face what so ever. GW should respectfully decline the medal as he has never come close to do what it takes to earn such a medal. I think it shows bad taste to accept the medal because while this guy was getting wounded earning this medal gw was finishing up an 8 ball.

Giving him the medal could have been a private thing also, but this is a good publicity stunt showing that the 'troops obviously support bush.'

I would like to present President Bush with the prize from my Cracker Jack box since he's too stupid to find one on his own.

i would expect the letter to this dude would contain more than simply 'no'.

you can, and as much as conservatives gripe about symbolism (don't burn the flag) and tradition, they seem to be applying a double standard. this medal is this country's highest honor awarded to soldiers, is it not?

gwb has no business accepting this under any circumstances, and i'm suprised the giver isn't receiving more flack from veterans.

it may not be given by the govt, but its still being 'awarded', as if he is in some way deserving.

Kofi Annan an Jimmy Carter don't deserve their nobel peace prizes... should they have respectfully declined? You can dislike the person, but attacking him for accepting a gift is wrong.

true, blatant conservative hypocrisy is commonplace.

correct, he is not responsible for his actions.

oh please. the only way you get a war medal is by serving in the military, and the irony of receiving it when one has actively avoided it is apparently lost on many of us here.

there is. kerry actually fought in a war.

honestly, i don't know what disgusts me more - bush accepting it, or this guy reducing its meaning to nothing.

Not everyone despises Bush to the degree where they consider it insulting to America to give him a gift pertaining to war. This has nothing to do with Kerry and his just as ridiculous medals. This is a gift from one man to another, giving personal property to show respect. I don't agree with attacking Bush just because somebody wants to give him a gift.

It is not the highest honor but one of the top. Veterans aren't bitching about it because a man can give his medal (that he earned) to whomever he wishes.

jeez is this the best the liberals can bitch about now?

Yea I saw the footage too, but there's some serious criticisms over the way he "achieved" them.

the point isn't to compare the two, in the sense that some of you are. its the simple fact that those swift boat losers spent all that money, took out all those adds questioning someone who volunteered for the war, and it had such an impact with so many conservatives, that his receiving that award was a slap in the face to those that actually 'deserved it'. and they were all, arguably, lies.

then we have someone give bush one, even if only honorary. bush was a draft dodger. and he got it for having to put up with verbal assaults.

Veterans aren't bitching about it because a man can give his medal (that he earned) to whomever he wishes.
absolutely, but given the circumstances, its laughable.

jeez is this the best the liberals can bitch about now?
i count two in this thread. yet again, its 'the liberals'.

Yea I saw the footage too, but there's some serious criticisms over the way he "achieved" them.
we've already gone over this. there was nothing questionable about the way they were obtained.
