Reuters - The chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives education committee on Thursday asked for an internal inquiry at the U.S. Education Department into possible conflicts of interest among department employees, lenders and others in the student loan market.
California Democrat Rep. George Miller (news, bio, voting record) made his request in a letter to department Inspector General John Higgins.
In the letter, Miller cited recent news reports that "several department officials responsible for administering federal student aid either held stock in or had close ties to some of the nation's largest student loan companies."
