Question about giving notice

I am giving notice at work tomorrow. I was planning on giving them a 2 week notice, BUT I am scheduled for vacation for what would be my last week there. I need the time off for finals, so I don't want to offer to work and my new job is scheduled to start (provided all goes well) the week after so I can't offer to give a 3 week notice instead.

So what do I do? Give a 2 week notice where my last day is the 11th knowing that my last day actually working will be next Wednesday (I'm off Thurs and Fri plus the following week)? I'm just an intern so my position isn't super important.

Any thoughts or suggestions though?

give notice asap and explain that you just got this opportunity and are sorry you couldn't give more notice. I gave 2 days notice once, so I understand the predicament you're in. But that should be fine. do you really need a good recommendation from them? otherwise it shouldn't really matter.

Screw giving notice. They don't give you 2 weeks notice when they fire you.

Uhh...

Whether you were fired or left on your own is pretty irrelevant actually. The importance lies in keeping them as a reference. Future employers call and ask, "Would you hire him/her back if he/she wanted to work for you?" You want that answer to be "Yes." If you leave without giving notice, that answer will almost certainly be "No." So if you're on good terms with your employer, it's always best to let them know enough in advance that you're leaving.

I would agree with this. While it sucks, I think you should expect that they won't pay you. If you want to ensure that they pay you for those vacation days, I'd suggest talking to your employer and telling them that you are still relying on that money for that month and it would be nice if they didn't try to withhold it. If you stomp in there making demands, you're not likely to keep them as a reference. Ask them first. If they say no, then make the decision of whether or not you want to keep them as a reference.

They are not allowed to ask questions like that when they call to check references. [edit] - Maybe it's a state thing?

You are under no obligation to give notice unless it's in a contract.

It's really about whether or not you want them as a reference on your resume, yeah.

I mean, even if you leave under bad circumstances with "the company", you may have people there (friends in management positions) who you could list as a reference that would give you a good review.. maybe not.

Talk to them before you do anything for sure, though

I'm an intern, I don't expect paid vacation at all! It was prearranged time off given for finals. Unpaid.

Yes, I would like to be able to use them as a reference so I do not want to leave on bad terms.

They know what is going on and what my intentions are. I was planning on using two people there for references, and they are both willing to provide me with a good reference even if I give notice the way I am planning.

yeah that's why I said cause I didn't figure it was paid... I would just give them notice that after your finals you aren't coming back

Then they should be cool with it. It's best to keep things civil. Even though you might not think you will ever work with/for them again who knows what might lie in the future. And don't listen to Scrum about job advice. He's just a tad bit bitter about his last job (as well he probably should be)

If done right they could still be used as a reference.

Also, that week they had planned for you off anyway and there really is no difference between being there and not being there. They would still technically have 2 weeks notice to work for finding a replacement.

What's wrong with being forthcoming with your employer? Can't you ask to meet the supervisor and explain what's going on?

All this underhanded planning seems unnecessary to me, why worry about it?

Just give your two weeks and don't worry if you already scheduled off the end of it. It won't really change much for them if they already had you scheduled off and unless your manager is a complete dick he won't mind.
