My Boss just called me...

... and said "hey, what do you think about doing some programming and stuff for the backbone team?" (that's the network guys)
me: "ummm... huh?"
him: "what do you think about it? would you like it or are you opposed to it?"
me: "um, that'd be cool, why you trying to get rid of me?"
him: "no no, you do the best work on our entire team, it's just they asked me if they knew anyone who would be good for the position, it's a promotion for what you currently are, so I thought I'd see if you were interested"
me: "uhh, sure, that sounds fine"
him: "alright, later"
me: *blink*

Weirdest fucking thing ever. Where I work does not just give out positions or promotions, you have to apply for them and go through an interview process, and a job offer (and possibly pay negotiations). I'm all about making more money, for sure, I just find it really weird that this would happen.

And I never know whether or not to trust my boss since he's left a few of my coworkers hung out to dry when they needed his backing. One of my biggest driving factors at my job is the knowledge that if I am not self-reliant in my work, I might as well quit because I'm not getting shit for help (and getting fired is a LONG and drawn out process).

So, I have no idea wtf to think about this development
