Supersize Me is such shit...

I just watched Supersize Me again and I have to rant about what a piece of shit it is...

There is no such thing as "bad" food. It's completely relative. You could eat nothing but McDonald's every day and lose weight. You could also eat enough "health" food to become a complete fat ass. Furthermore, lack of exercise also isn't the problem. You could do absolutely no exercise, but if you watch what you eat, you won't become fat. You could also exercise for an hour a day and eat so badly that you have huge pot belly.

If you burn more calories than you consume, you'll lose weight, and vice versa, period. It's just that simple. Use whatever foods in the equation you like. It doesn't matter. It's all about calories.

There are lots of businesses trying to get us to think it's food that's the problem. It's not. It's people not understanding what a caloric deficit is.

Furthermore, more exercise is not necessarily the answer. Getting kids to exercise every day isn't the answer to obesity. It's a short term fix because most people won't keep up an exercise routine. The only thing you can do is teach people about nutrition and let them decide whether they want to follow it.

While ultimately it does come down to calories vs calories out, there are differences in terms of nutrition.

Exercising everyday may not solve obesity, but it increases general health and fitness

True, but the average fat ass American needs to worry about the basics before the details. After people get rid of their excess 30 pounds of fat, then they can worry about fine tuning their diets for nutrition.

By the way, people get caught up in the nutrition minutia to justify their ridiculous intake of calories:

"Oh, it's healthy pizza! It's made with whole grain bread, has lots of vitamins in all the vegetables, and even contains LOTS of protein in the cheese!" Nevermind that it contains 1000 calories a slice...

Basically, I'm saying the average person is better off just ignoring nutritional details completely and only concentrating on calories. The details just end up confusing people and providing a convenient rationalization.

It's not just about calories.

If you ate shit food every single day from McDonald's for every single meal and still ate just enough to have low calorie intake, your body would be much more susceptible to diseases and a million other problems.

While people can overeat on healthy foods and gain weight, addressing food quality is still just as important as addressing food quantity.

McDonalds has very little nutrition. Eating only but McDonalds is not good for your metabolism and body. There's also a lot of trans fats, cholesterol, etc where if you have too much you can cause serious health problems for yourself.

I lost 50 lbs just from dieting once. And by dieting I just made my portions MUCH smaller. I kept away from sweets for the most part. When I was in a hurry and McD's was the most convenient I would eat a fish sandwich and a large diet coke. I really didn't exercise during the weight loss but I did join softball after and was AMAZED how fast I could run compared to before I lost that weight.

It's time for me to do it again I'm afraid

I agree, and I never understood the appeal of this film. How obvious is it that eating McDonlds everyday is bad for you?

It reminds me of the anti-smoking commercials from "TRUTH" that go way overboard and insult your intelligence. Or the Peta stuff that gets fanatical to make a point. It is not a constructive way to argue.

Calories and sugar are not poison if you burn them up!

A 40 year old cannot get away with what an active 20 year old can eat. Moderation is the key for most people.

And people ignore his "rules" during the filming...

Before launching this experiment, Spurlock, ... ate a vegan diet....... It follows a 30-day time period during which Spurlock subsists exclusively on McDonald's fast food and stops exercising regularly. During the filming, Spurlock dined at McDonald's restaurants three times per day, sampling every item on the chain's menu at least once. He consumed an average of 5,000 calories (the equivalent of 9.26 Big Macs) per day during the experiment.

* He must fully eat three McDonald's meals per day.
* He must sample every item on the McDonald's menu at least once over the course of the 30 days.
* He must only ingest items on the menu. This includes bottled water.
* He must eat a McDonald's salad every tenth meal.
* He must "Super Size" his meal whenever, and only when, the option is offered to him.
* He must only walk 5,000 steps per day.

So let me get this right....... he went from being a vegan and exercising to eating 5,000 calories/day and not exercising and there's any surprise he gained weight?

I think anyone who is surprised by anything in this film is a fucking retard. Anyone who eats 9 Big Macs/day is going to get fucked up. I'm going to make a movie where I eat nothing but Snickers and drink soda that I add sugar to and see if I have any health issues.

My thoughts exactly. He explained this at the beginning of the movie and still people were surprised by the results.

Well to be fair, the surprising part wasn't that he became fat and less healthy, it was the astonishing degree of his health problems in only one month. I think I remember seeing his liver started to look like that of an alcoholic and his present and future health were at serious risk. I don't think most people could expect that from only one month of eating junk food.

One month of zero activity and eating 5,000 calories and I'd expect drastic health changes.

These people did slightly similar experiments and their health improved.

In New Jersey, documentary filmmaker Scott Caswell also performed a similar experiment. The results of his diet can be seen in his movie, Bowling for Morgan. It can be seen for free at BowlingForMorgan.com. Like Spurlock, Caswell consumed only McDonald's food but generally opted for the healthier choices and did not gorge himself—a fact that Caswell often compares to the overeating done by Spurlock, who was often seen forcing himself to eat when he was not hungry. Over the course of the experiment, he lost 20 pounds and his cholesterol fell sharply. However, Caswell's film depicted him eating many Premium Salads from McDonald's that were not available during the making of Super Size Me. Caswell does not reveal the details of his experiment, such as what meals he eats or their nutritional content.

Soso Whaley, of Kensington, New Hampshire, made her own film about dieting at McDonald's, called Me and Mickey D. The film follows Whaley as she spends three 30-day periods on the diet. She dropped from 175 to 139 pounds, eating 2,000 kilocalories per day at McDonald's. The film was funded by the Competitive Enterprise Institute (Whaley holds a C.E.I. fellowship).

Raleigh, North Carolina, resident Merab Morgan went on a 90-day diet in which she ate at McDonald's exclusively, but she limited her intake to 1,400 kilocalories (5,900 kilojoules) per day. She lost 37 pounds in the process.

San Antonio, Texas resident Deshan Woods went on a 90-day diet in which he lost nearly 14 pounds. He documented the entire experiment on his website LiquidCalories.com. His overall health improved while sticking to a diet mainly in burgers and fries. He stayed away from sugary drinks and stuck to non-caloric beverages instead. His average caloric intake was 2,500 kilocalories a day, which included 130 grams of fat. His cholesterol dropped from 204 to around 160.
Supersize Me is extremist propaganda bullshit, nothing more.

5,000 calories a day and no exercise? That would take extreme effort for most individuals. The point is, the guy tried to fuck up his health and he succeeded, no surprise found.
