so i was in court this morning

some of you might remember me talking about this guy that tried to mug me back in February as i was walking home.

today was the grand jury hearing. I must say, it was one of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had with the justice system. Cop picked me (and my neighbor) up at my house this morning, drove us into the city, walked us to court, introduced us to the district attorney and my victim advocate. We were first up (which I heard rarely happens), got in, answered questions, said what happened, got out, back to work at 10am. cop drove me to work too.

wow.

I hope they throw the book at the bastard.

someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

he said he usually brings in criminals to these things, so today was a very pleasant drive for him and he was happy to do it.

Nope.

I don't live in Mass so I don't care. But you pay taxes in one of the most-taxed and highest-taxed states so I'm surprised you're ok that this is standard procedure. It's easy to think "hey this is great!!" when it benefits you, but I hope you aren't complaining about your state and local taxes.

The conservatives are usually pretty cranky, you'll have to excuse them

No, it doesn't need to be. Justice could have just as easily been had if she drove herself to court.

most witnesses wouldn't show up to a grand jury hearing, that is why they are subpoenaed and everything is done in secret

So serve the subpoena in secret and require them to show up. If they don't show up to a trial they're fucked, and they don't get rides to and from the courthouse for that. Why should a grand jury hearing be any different?

what would be cheaper, giving witnesses(most of whom are in custody) a ride or trying to hunt them down later. Keep in mind that once you track them down, that is assuming that they haven't been intimidated by the defendant yet, you would need to reconvene the grand jury and you would need to pay all those grand jurors.

picking them up and paying a victim/witness specialist is much cheaper in the long haul.

for the record, I was subpoenaed, and the same cop that gave me notice lives like 1/2 a mile from my house. Soooooo, he said since he's driving in to court that morning, and we were first up on the docket, he would pick me and my neighbor (a witness and my favorite good Samaritan) up. so there you go. he was just being nice.

people actually can be nice sometimes, believe it or not.
