Former gay US governor wants to become a priest

NEW YORK: The former US governor of New Jersey, who resigned in 2004 after admitting to an adulterous relationship with another man, now wants to become a priest, the seminary he is entering said on Thursday.

Jim McGreevey, a lapsed Catholic who is currently locked in divorce proceedings with his wife, plans to enter the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church in New York City later this year.

The seminary's director of communications, Bruce Parker, said McGreevey would be starting a three-year master of divinity program in September. "We look forward to welcoming him," he added.

An unnamed friend of McGreevey's was quoted by the New York Post as saying the former governor had been considering the move for some time.

"He's been thinking about this heavily for the past two years. It's not something that he takes lightly. Despite what some people think, he's a very spiritual person," the newspaper reported.

The details of McGreevey's failed marriage have proved frequent fodder for the US tabloid press. Last year the former governor wrote that he only married his wife to advance his political career and has said that she knew he was gay.

But just recently, his wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, countered that she would never have married him if she knew he was homosexual, and that she still didn't believe that he was gay but bisexual.

McGreevey, who after coming out while still in office became the United States' first openly gay governor, has been attending services at an Episcopal church in Manhattan for the last two years with his Australian boyfriend, Mark O'Donnell.

He's released a book, he's been propping himself all over the media. And as soon as his fame begins to die down again he announces he wants to be a priest. Is this guy just an attention whore or what?

Out here it isn't taboo for a priest to be gay. There are some churches in NJ that are fairly understanding, much different from much of the nation I would assume. I'm willing to bet this causes debate though within the church for a gay adulterer to publicly announce he's joining the cloth. This guy needs to crawl under a rock and just stay there already.

Good for him. All though I find organized religion to be a crutch, I guess he has to do something with his guilt.

I am not sure I ever saw ANYTHING showing he was corrupt...like, proof per se? Convictions? Anything?

He admitted to passing legislation because people blackmailed him. They said they would tell the state he was gay if he didn't pass what they wanted him to or give them a state contract. He embezzled millions to his friends and possibly himself through pay-to-play, etc etc.

That's the American political system. Lobbyists are no different. "We pay you so you vote this way." Instead of giving him money, they actually committed CRIMES by blackmailing him. Again, I have yet to see him convicted of any crimes. BTW, your "link" has no outside links. Nothing to verify your story with.

I'm not trying to convince anyone that he's a corrupt politician in this thread. I'm not trying to even make it into a partisan thread about Democrats and Republicans. Hell I'm not even talking about crimes.

What I'm talking about is his need to do controversial things after losing his office to keep finding ways to get back into the media spotlight and how I feel he should just stop already. This wasn't meant to be a partisan bickering thread. It's meant to be a continuation of similar discussions found in this thread where it was obvious to many people he was being an attention whore.

Yes. But teaching ethics and joining a seminary are basically guaranteed to be a couple of the more controversial things he could have done.

He made a media show of his departure, wouldn't let it end. Then he released a book, wouldn't let that end. Then when the book died down he started talking about his departure from office again and his homosexuality. Then he took a job teaching ethics on state funded dollars. And now he's telling the media he's planning on joining a seminary. The seminary didn't contact the media, they only confirmed it. He's the one letting the world know he plans to enroll. He can't go two weeks without putting himself into a controversy in NJ.

Perhaps you should e-mail him a list of things he should do to stay out of the spotlight.

One could say the same about Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, yet on a political forum some like to talk about controversial current affairs, such as a gay adulterer looking to join a seminary. His attention whoredom has been discussed in the past. This is just the latest event. People seem more focused on attacking me than the issue though.

Besides I wouldn't want to give him any ideas.
