Sarkozy's election victory marred by riots

Street violence took some of the shine off victory in the French elections for new president Nicolas Sarkozy.

Far-left activists had running battles with police across France as 270 people were taken in for questioning and 367 parked vehicles were torched.

Riot police fired tear gas into a crowd gathered at the Place de la Bastille in Paris as news of Sarkozy's victory came through.

Small bands of youths hurled stones and other objects at police and bared their backsides at riot officers.

Other fights with the police broke out in Toulouse, Lyon, Rennes and Nantes. Two police unions said firebombs targeted schools and recreation centres in several towns in the Essonne region just south of Paris.

So this is how the coddled youth of France react to the clear will of the voting public! Rather disgraceful if you ask me. Is this the kind of responce the new leadership will have when it tries to open the over-protected job market to employ more youth and not just the lucky ones? Well, maybe more of the next generation won't be so selfish?

In 2000 we had the closest election possible and roughly 50% of Americans were unhappy with the declared winner. Yet there was mob of smelly youths that took to the street rioting and burning cars. Again in 2004 we had a President win re-election that is clearly hated by a good percentage of the county. Yet we didn't have any rioting.

In 2000 we had the closest election possible and roughly 50% of Americans were unhappy with the declared winner. Yet there was mob of smelly youths that took to the street rioting and burning cars. Again in 2004 we had a President win re-election that is clearly hated by a good percentage of the county. Yet we didn't have any rioting.

Most western nations don't have rioting after elections. It speaks to the climate in France at the moment and the severity of the political divide.

Let's not jump the gun here...they don't quite have a democracy. Isn't it the mostly poor people that are upset they don't have a welfare president now? Are these the same people (mostly Muslim?) that were rioting in years past?

according to the AP article I just read it's mostly teens and 20-something whites rioting this time around.

It was the teens, 20-somethings rioting the last time as well when they changed laws making it harder for them to receive employment. Typically over 10% of France is unemployed and they do their best to prevent younger people from starting careers or getting hired. France really needs a conservative over a liberal to fix the problems of France, but they see it as an immediate threat on their well being.
