So today, I have been married half my life...

21 years ago today we were married in a Justice of the Peace wedding in a cubicle of a courthouse in Waukeagan, IL. I was 21 and my wife was 19.

My wife and I got engaged on Christmas eve the year before. We had planned on a July wedding. Then I got an offer to transfer with my company to North Carolina. I accepted and they said I needed to be there in two weeks. Panic time!

My wife and I were both still living at our childhood homes with our parents. I was working full time and going to school at night. My wife was a professional Polynesian dancer. And we had nothing except our bedroom furniture, two cars and two motorcycles. All of our friends and family donated couches, tables, chairs, kitchen stuff, bathroom stuff.... everything we would need to start a home together. We got our marriage application, did the blood work that was required and arranged the earliest day possible to get married before we moved. That ended up being May 8th, we were moving May 9th.

After the wedding in which about 15 of our closest family and friends attended we went to McDonalds to get everyone lunch. Then went to U-haul to pick up a truck, and went to our homes and started packing. Our Ninja's went first (I had a 1985 900 Ninja and my wife had a 1986 600 Ninja) because they were our most valued possessions. Then the rest of the donated stuff followed. I sold my truck the week before so we only had one car to worry about and we towed it behind the U-haul.

We arrived in Greensboro, NC LATE on May 9th and had our "honeymoon" at the Greensboro airport Holiday Inn. Two days later we found a great apartment in Winston-Salem and began our lives together. It's been a great journey and there is no one in the world that I would rather have been with to help me along.

The details of my life are quite inconsequential.

Very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Some times he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy, the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical, summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of 12 I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen, a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum, it's breathtaking, I suggest you try it.

Congrats. Most of the best marriage stories I've heard start off in the same way.
