Obama 10,000 dead in Kansas

YouTube Video
ERROR: If you can see this, then YouTube is down or you don't have Flash installed.

Here Obama claims 10,000 people died in the tornado in Kansas. I believe the real number was 12. I think this is a political oops. He's been making more and more of these oopsies lately. I still like the guy, and he's talking about a lot of issues, but he should really only talk about the ones he really knows what he's talking about. Because he made a good point with the national guard at the end, but it's destroyed by his complete lack of understanding of the event and the tragedies that took place.

I also noticed he's talking a bit more black considering he was in Richmond. I don't like that. He's usually very well spoken and doesn't have much of a hint of ebonics when he speaks. Here in Richmond he had some in his voice. It's like the Hillary "preacher" when she goes down south. It's sad people can't truly be themselves. You don't see Rudy talking like he's a gangster from the Bronx when he goes to NY, why do these people feel the need to change their accent depending on their audience?

Granted Obama's accent wasn't that noticeable here, but it was definitely a different Obama than we're used to hearing.

Referring to isn't the same as pretending to be. Hillary refers to the south all the time, she doesn't need to give hour long speeches pretending to be something different. Obama refers to blacks all the time. He doesn't need to change his personality just because he's in front of black people.

YouTube - Barack Obama: My Plans for 2008

Then you hear that speech he gave in front of a Richmond crowd and you go.. huh?

Rudy did the same thing, reinforce stereotypes of his heritage in order to play on preconceived notions about people who fit the bill.. and he didn't just "refer" to it, he did impersonations..

And, lets not forget where Hillary lived for a great many years, I'm not sure how she's pretending any less than the others.

I'm interesting in seeing one of you quantify this somehow.. I don't think the color of ones skin changes the way they sound.

Certainly people from the south do have a certain twang and rhythm to their speech, but that's ethnicity and culture, which is different from race..

Race: a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics
Black people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Black is a racial, political, sociological or cultural classification of people."

I'm not saying he has a black accent because of his skin, I'm saying he has a black accent because of his race. People can also sound "white." I don't think there's anything wrong with saying it. When someone calls me on the phone you can sometimes tell the person is black by their speech. In the OP video when I close my eyes I picture a black man speaking. In the other videos I posted I close my eyes and I just hear a deep eloquent voice. You can't always tell, but quite often you can.

Since you are fond of Wikipedia: Ethnic group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An ethnic group or ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, usually on the basis of a presumed common genealogy or ancestry.[1] Recognition by others as a distinct ethnic group is often a contributing factor to developing this bond of identification.[2] Ethnic groups are also often united by common cultural, behavioural, linguistic, ritualistic, or religious traits.[1] Processes that result in the emergence of such identification are summarized as ethnogenesis.
Skin color is race. Ethnicity is the political, sociological, and cultural classification of people.

I don't think the way you used "black" was focusing on the ethnicity of the audience, but whatever.

I agree with your premise that it's stupid to change who you are and how you sound based on the audience you're speaking to, but that's politics for you.

What did you think I meant? I can't think of any other way to interpret it.

The only way to know what someone "meant" is to ask them to clarify their position instead of guessing and making assumptions.
