Tornado Alley vs Katrina

So it seems that a certain segment of the population when Katrina hit said "OMG, why didn't they leave??" or "OMG, why did they choose to live in such a dangerous place????" Are those same people saying the same things about these poor white people that got killed in these tornadoes? The midwest is NOTORIOUS for tornadoes, yet year after year, people die needlessly because they won't move. Why don't they just pick up and move to where it's safe? That's what they're supposed to do right? It's not like they haven't had warnings or don't know any better. It's not like the goverment (local and Federal) has told them "Don't worry about the tornado barriers...they'll hold up to an F4." Does nobody else see a double standard here that the hypocritical record books can barely contain?

They were certainly taking risk but they know what they are. How hard is it to build a good shelter?

But Katrina was a problem of living so far below sea level in the middle of two major bodies of water. It was clearly known to be a major flood risk days in advance. I do not believe in forcing people out, but much more could have been done to get more people out. Would you rather be in a school bus on the way to Texas or in your own home underwater to the rafters?

They're not exactly comperable...they're similar in that both are danger prone, but you have a lot more notice with a hurricane than you do with a tornado.

So the photos and movies and newsclips of poor white people standing by their destroyed homes for the past 100 years isn't enough of a warning?

already said above, these are not comparable.

if someone told people in kansas "an F5 tornado will hit your town in 2 days" and they didn't leave, when the tornado hit I'd point and laugh

if you're going to make these stupid comparisons at least *TRY* for apples:apples

Are you guys dense? They HAVE warning. It's called "Tornado Alley" What kind of warning do you need? Are people in that area too stupid to realize the name of the area they live in MIGHT be a clue?

What does that have to do with anything? And btw, you may not have seen them but there are various buildings and areas down there designated as hurricane shelters.

It's no surprise to me the hypocrites in here are so dedicated to keep their hypocrisy alive. Again, let's address the issue at hand. What's the difference? I have yet to hear anything credible. Another "point" you guys had "oMG theY had Days!!!" Wrong. How many hurricanes have you seen divert at the last minute before hitting shore and not hitting where people "predicted?" So up until that hurricane hit shore, are you saying there was NO WAY the hurricane could have hit somewhere else? That kind of lessens the "warning time" doesn't it?

they knew the levee could hold a cat3 hurricane
they knew 2 days out a cat4 hurricane was coming
they stayed
they then demanded that I give them money because they chose to stay

fuck them.

they knew for the past 100 years that tornadoes are very common in a certain area.
they stayed
then then demanded that I give them money because they chose to stay.

fuck them.

So why doesn't that apply to YOUR people? How about the very same people that build their houses next to the river that floods every 5 years? If they are YOUR people, they get a pass?

based on that logic, nobody can live anywhere.

omg, earthquakes, hillslides, floods, tornados, hurricanes, volcanos, etc

If someone accurately predicted a major earthquake here in 2 days and people didnt leave, they shouldnt get govt handouts for a year.

But 2 mins of warning ?

Absolutely wrong. FREAK OCCURRENCES are not the same as "tornadoes year after year after year". There are exceptions we can discuss though. California? No sympathy. I don't live in California because at ANY time an earthquake can come and destroy everything I own. I don't live in Florida because of the increased chances of hurricanes. I don't move near Mt. St Helens because, well, you know. I don't move to tornado fucking alley for a reason.

there have been 5 major earthquakes in the last 100 years and very people have lost their homes. So that is pretty horrible reasoning.

The attacks on the residents of New Orleans was simple. You had a specific warning 2 days before it hit. why didnt you evacuate. Florida residents evacuate when they get major hurricanes coming in.
