Washington-based XM condemned the remarks.

"We deplore the comments made on Wednesday's 'Opie & Anthony Show,' " XM spokesman Nathaniel Brown told The Associated Press on Friday. He would not say whether XM planned to take disciplinary action.

Opie and Anthony, whose full names are Anthony Cumia and Greg "Opie" Hughes, apologized to listeners on Friday's show.

"We apologize to the public officials for comments that we made on our XM show on May 9th. We take very seriously the responsibility that comes with our creative freedom and regret any offense that this segment has caused," they said.

Because the show airs on satellite radio, there are no federal restrictions on its content. According to XM's Web site, the radio service has parental controls that allow users to block access to channels that frequently contain explicit language. Those channels are designated with an "XL" notation.

The same radio duo was dumped by CBS Radio in August 2002 for running a contest in which they said two listeners had sex in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral. They were hired by XM in 2004.

The remarks could become an issue as XM seeks approval from the Federal Communications Commission to merge with New York-based Sirius Satellite Radio, said Tom Taylor, editor of the trade magazine Inside Radio.

"XM and Sirius don't want any regulation," he said in Friday's New York Daily News. "But it's come up in four congressional hearings -- and at this point, the merger is such a close call, any issue could become important."

I don't listen to these guys but come on. First, what's the purpose of being on satellite radio if you have to limit what you say? Second, I don't see what they said as being all that bad or different from any other jokes I hear on regular tv and radio. When are we going to get off this "apologizing" bandwagon?

I saw this story today, and I know it is an insult, but what did I think?


Not a soul but Opie and Anthony Fans would ever hear these stupid remarks if we did not have a major news crisis over this! They are a private broadcast and they are well known as lude and crude! How much tact do have when you claim to be insulted but spread to everybody the very remarks that caused offense? Perhaps a law against blatant media hype over content needs to make its way through the Congress?

They work for a corporation. I doubt the corporation wants to be known for the station that likes talking about raping the Sec of State.

they didn't have to apologize

They apologized because they wanted to which was probably because it was in their best interest to. I didn't hear much of an outcry demanding an apology. People on the radio apologize all the time for offending people. Some because they mean it others because it's good for their job.

But why is this a story at all? No doubt you have heard a remark which you did not spread because you knew it would cause further insult. I think the media is going all PC crazy over this type of thing because it is getting ratings to spread this stuff like High School girl gossip. That is starting to bother me more than two radio clowns. What good is a forced apology anyway if you don't really care who you offend?

I thought one of the points of satellite radio was that you didn't have to watch our mouth?

Much like HBO, you are paying to listen to it. There either aren't any or aren't many sponsors to try and scare away.

the point is the OWNER has more leeway in what he ALLOWS to be said, not that the DJ has blanket free reign to say whatever he wants.

if the OWNER thinks this shit will cost him more money than it will bring in he has every right to tell the DJ to apologize. Of course the DJ has every right to refuse. Of course the owner has every right to fire him for it.

I can go along with that. But don't tell me the mainstream media gave a damn about XM before this became another outrage story. That is what I am talking about.

They should be concerned about their paying audiance, but not about the media PC enforcers who just hype for attention.

Of course it will. The people who subscribe to satellite radio for OandA and Stern do it because they want to hear outrageous things which would never fly on terrestrial radio. There is a certain demented humor to these things that either you appreciate or you don't. Lots of people DO appreciate it.

What's really ridiculous about this whole thing is that probably none, or almost none, of the actual O and A listeners were offended. All of this hype is from people who don't pay to listen to them anyway. Of course I'm just speculating, but I can't imagine that O and A fans would be offended by this any more than normal.

Well I think you're right on both of those points but XM still has the ability to cancel contracts.





I think that talking about raping the first lady and the sec of state is absurd and worth firing someone over. However, that doesn't mean they violated the law or the constitution. If I fired them it would be a business decision because they are driving away dollars.

I think you might be able to put this in the category of inciting hate or action but quite frankly I'm not ready to go there yet. These are shock jocks and while i find it sick and disturbing they shouldn't lose their job simply because someone disagreed with them IMO.

"This is a victory not only for the Asian-American community, but for all communities who find themselves constant targets of racist and sexist programming," said Jeanette Wang, an executive with the Organization of Chinese Americans.

Mateo would not comment on the status of the DJs' contracts or whether they were still on the CBS payroll.

Imus plans a $120 million breach of contract suit against CBS Radio.

I'm sure the sat.radio marketing crew did their math and figured they'd lose more subscribers than they'd gain. Or maybe a higher-up at the station was offended. Either way the station has every right to tell them to apologize.

OandA fans were outraged when they said the mayor died. OandA fans were outraged when they had a contest that resulted in a couple having sex in a church. Just because OandA fans now pay to hear them doesn't mean people aren't going to get offended when they say it would be funny if some women got raped.
