DETROIT -- Police made an arrest Thursday night in connection with a violent attack on a 91-year-old World War II veteran last Friday.

NewsChannel5's sister station, WXYZ, reported Deontae Edwards, 22, was arrested after the video aired during newscasts.

The surveillance video showed Leonard Sims being punched 21 times.


WXYZ reported that days after the assault, Leonard Sims said the swelling has gone down quite a bit but the black and blue marks are clearly visible.

"He came up. He wanted a light for a cigarette. Just as I, he threw a punch at me," Sims said.

Officials said the man approached Sims and asked for a light and then began to beat him over and over again.

Sims was pinned in between his car door and another car, making it difficult for him to go anywhere.

"He grabbed my keys out of my hand and hopped in the car," Sims said.

WXYZ said the tape shows that a woman who appears to have been with the carjacker tries to get in the car while a small crowd of people stood by.

Sims and his family said they hope Detroit police can catch the man who beat him and stole his 2005 Chevy Malibu.

"They give me some painkiller pills, and I've been taking them," Sims said.

This is ridiculous and if the colors in this were reversed Sharpton and Jackson would be screaming hate crime across the airwaves and papers.

This is a truly sickening ordeal and I do not believe in hate crimes. I do believe that if you're desperate enough to beat up a 91 year old you're off your rocker and deserve to be locked up for the rest of your life.

So where's Sharpton and Jackson on this? Where's the race bait crew and the hate crime crew? For the most part this has had little if any major network coverage. I've seen a snippet on CNN and another one Oreilly and that is it.

Thoughts?

Nobody is going to say this involves race and won't see it as a hate crime like if the races were reversed.

Also, sharpton/jackson/other racists masquerading as civil rights activists probably believe he's got enough white people to defend him so they aren't needed.

Btw, I'd be fine if the judge offered him two sentences... (a) years and years in jail, or (b) someone with the same physical advantage he had over the 91 year old beats him as bad.

Well as I said I do not believe in "hate crimes" either its a crime or not. If you beat the shit out of someone regardless of your color and their color you need to be in prison.

Why should this get any national coverage? The story is totally inconsequential for anyone outside the city where it happened. Horrible WTF crimes happen to people every day and they don't even get the coverage that this one got.

I guess I'm glad this sort of thing doesn't get national news coverage. The reason I stopped watching the local news is because I didn't appreciate hearing about who got shot and stabbed that day. All it does is make you paranoid about crime and give you zero useful information.

Adding increased penalties because a crime is more vicious (not in motive, but in its action) is ridiculous in my view

It's obvious his mental problems led him down this path, he bears little responsibility, although he needs to be locked up in a mental institution

Shit, if I had a show on BET and it got cancelled i'd cry racism too. Look...if you give attention to shit like this, it plays into their hands. IF these people want to cry racism, let them prove it. I'm sure that has happened. But you didn't answer my original question......... has a black person ever been charged with a black on white hate crime? I'm sure plenty of whites have been charged but in all the crimes committed against whites none of them amounts to a hate crime?

Yes. Here is an example I remember in recent news. I know they were charged with a hate crime, don't know if they were convicted of one.
