Iran to hold contest for holocaust cartoons

Holocaust cartoon fair opens in Iran - Yahoo! News
We staged this fair to explore the limits of freedom Westerners believe in," Masoud Shojai, head of the country's "Iran Cartoon" association and the fair organizer, said.

"They can freely write anything they like about our prophet, but if one raises doubts about the Holocaust he is either fined or sent to prison," he added.

These people are insane. First off I don't know where they get that crap about being sent to prison. We have something in the US called freedom of speech.
This will only make them look ignorant. I gurantee you that no one will blow themselves up in protest of a cartoon in this country. Maybe they can take a lesson from us on this one.

Wasn't there a guy who was sent to prison for saying the holocaust was BS in Germany?

I'm sure that's what they are talking about. "The West" isn't limited to the US.

I thought this happened awhile ago after the Mohammed cartoon became such a big deal?

And yeah, in some European countries it's a crime to deny that the Holocaust happened.

Yup. Germany and Austria for sure. Canada as well (for some reason). Of course they left out the part where in Iran if you draw a picture of Mo they will execute you.

We should have a holocaust cartoon fair in the USA

"They can freely write anything they like about our prophet, but if one raises doubts about the Holocaust he is either fined or sent to prison," he added.
I'd hate to think that the Iranians really are exposing hypocrisy in our culture. I'd like to believe that while there'd be a lot of disgusted people in America if we did this, ultimately it wouldn't be as controversial as the Mohammed cartoon in the Muslim world.

If you ask me, we should have our own holocaust cartoon fest here...the message would be, "Sorry, you were mistaken...there really is nothing off limits here. We can discuss whatever controversial thing our little hearts desire...now go fuck yourselves."

Eh?

Unfortunately, this will never happen...forget the faulty analogy of the holocaust and Mohammed...if we had a cartoon fest to make fun of Jesus, the Fundie Christians would never stand for it, and they'd prove the Iranians right. I also have a feeling the ADL would shit several bricks at this in the USA.

But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe we can have both a holocaust and Jesus cartoon fest! Who's with me!?

I think it'd happen, but there'd be protests and mass outrage, just not on the same level as it was with the Mohammed cartoons..

I mean, there was a whole chop thread about Jesus awhile back, could send those to some media outlets.. I have them saved somewhere.

I don't think a major media outlet here would ever publish a cartoon mocking Jesus.

yeah especially Historians, which is why I decided not to get a PhD in history...I see academics pour years into their lives trying to better understand history yet some 20something out of college will get a job at a right wing magazine, cut and paste some wikipedia articles and get more media attention than any serious academic work

Iran is worse, but thats regime propaganda, in America its the conservative think tank which is ignoring history or twisting it...really sad

Freedom of expression + Freedom of speech = regardless of whether or not I agree with the message.

I'd be against the message, but for the ability to say it.
