How I Love New Jersey

Being a New Yorker I've always loved our little brother to south of us, the garbage, the smell, the turnpike and all that stuff - but wait, here are some quotes of what others who are more articulate them me, lets read what they have to say about this beautiful State:

First from the great Benjamin Franklin,

"New Jersey is like a beer barrel, tapped at both ends, with all the live beer running into Philadelphia and New York"

Woody Allan,

"The curtain rises on a vast primitive wasteland, not unlike certain parts of New jersey.”

Here are others:

"Why are New Yorkers so depressed? Because the light at the end of the tunnel is New Jersey!"

"This is a state where people go to a landfill next to a turnpike that's on fire on alternate weekends to cheer a team from New York."

"Scientists at the New Jersey Insurance News Service have determined that one-half of the state's drivers have road rage. It is not known whether this condition is caused by a defective gene, or by New Jersey."

There's another Futurama thing from the third episode, I,Roommate where they are looking for apartments and they look at every trashhole in New York. Then they come across one apartment that looks really nice and Fry says "Ok, I give up. What's the catch?" The salesman says "No catch, though we are *technically* in New Jersey." Scene changes to them back at their work sitting around and Fry says "Not one livable apartment."

New Jersey bashing is funny and I've never even been there.

But for those of you from Jersey, your state song:

I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I'm proud about it, I love the Garden State.
I'M FROM NEW JERSEY and I want to shout it, I think it's simply great.
All of the other states throughout the nation may mean a lot to some;
But I wouldn't want another, Jersey is like no other, I'm glad that's where I'm from.

Being from NJ you hear the best... The worst things are the true things. There's a million jokes about having to pay to leave Jersey, but not to get in. Every toll in NJ you pay on the exiting side, not the entrance side. It's kinda strange. Free to come in, but once you're here and want to get out you gotta pay the toll.

Our corporate headquarters used to be in Iselin, NJ. So my only exposure to it was the drive from Newark Airport to there which has the be the ugliest scenery I have ever seen. I couldn't understand why anyone lived there.

I remember when I was taking my first real "corporate" trip. I was 20. My boss was this 65 year old ex Navy guy with a gutter mouth and a great sense of humor. I was kind of nervous going there and asked him what it was like. It was the first time I ever heard anyone use the classic phrase "If the world ever needed an enema, God would stick the tube in NJ."

I have since seen nicer parts.

Dohhhh....

I have been to New Jersey several times and I must say the beach is nice.
Everything else is crap and I honestly have no idea why anyone would want to live there other than cheaper than New York. (no offense to those who live there).

Have you ever been to a different beach? Ocean water isn't supposed to be a mixture of yellow, green and brown. And it's not cheaper than NY. It's cheaper than NYC, but our property taxes in NJ are higher than NY.

There are a lot of jokes about how bad our beaches are. Which beach did you go to?

I should have said I never swam in the water but only strolled the beaches....... Ocean city and near Island beach state park. The beaches are nothing like a nice beach (hawaii), just trying to say something positive about NJ.

I think so. Metro Park sounds familiar. Our headquarters has since moved to Cary, NC. A large portion of our headquarters was used for training and tech support. Our tech support was dependent on having experienced people working there so they offered jobs to experienced field service engineers. But it was costing them a fortune because the only way they could get anyone to move to NJ was to offer them ridiculous salaries. So they first moved our tech support and training facilities to Cary and then the rest of our headquarters followed.

Needless to say, now that it's in NC it's much easier to get quality people to agree to move there without giving them CEO salaries.

It's expensive to live out here. Taxes are ridiculous. That and moving to NJ isn't exactly a prize.

originally being from maryland, with family in RI, i am soooo used to driving 95 and taking the Jersey Turnpike back and forth.

god i hate the jersey turnpike. never realized the tolls were only when leaving... although if you get off the pike in the middle of the state you have to pay too you know....

Yea there's lots of tolls in NJ. I mean leaving NJ to get to say Delaware or PA (whichever way you came). Every exit NJ you would pay the toll. You typically don't have to pay a toll to enter NJ. It's free to come in, but it'll cost you if you want to get out. There's a lot of jokes about that.

But yea, the Turnpike you pay by the exit you get on and the exit you get off. The Parkway has toll booth stations throughout. And quite a few other roads have random tolls as well, especially near the beaches and AC.

My biggest pet peeve about Jersey, besides the tolls every 4 feet and the smell in Northern Jersey is that I can't make a simple fucking U-turn on their streets, I have to make a right and use their roundabouts and wait on their lights to make a left, making a 2 second thing turn into 5 mins

They're called jughandles in NJ! And a simple 2 second thing would hold up traffic! There's no such thing as a simple 2 second left hand turn on a NJ highway! Get your ass out of the way and wait your turn instead of holding up traffic.
