Car problems suck almost more then anything. You don't know if you are getting ripped off. Seems everything that happens is always REALLY expensive. We finally found a place that we like taking our cars to. Twice now they have fixed problems we have had without even charging us (once was the car kept dying. Loose battery cable. Can't remember the other).

Once you find someplace you like at least the stress of knowing you AREN'T being ripped off is gone.

$700 is pretty high for a cat. Ask if they can weld in a generic replacement. Parts and labor should come to $250 - $300 at absolute max.

i'm called the Subaru Guru who's in the Boston area to take a look. I also called my brother who dabbles in cars and he works for Metlife Auto and Home and he said that if I purchased the part from the dealer, it's $609.43 not including labor or tax, but I might be able to get an after market part, but i'd have to go searching for that... which i don't know if i feel too comfortable with an after market part. it seems like it's just asking to blow up or something.

god damnit. i hate this shit.

i guess i have to stop those late night binge drinking sessions.

It should cost $150 and 30 minutes to replace a cat. (That's if you don't mind going aftermarket or junkyard.)

Does the CC even do anything the car requires to operate?

in less than 3 minutes I found both cats for sale for $476... RockAuto.com

that's a starting point, plus if you only need one you should be able to source it somehow

I understand that Subaru's have odd cats, I used to own a Scooby myself

Buying parts from the dealer is always going to be massively more expensive than taking it somewhere else.. Get the parts somewhere cheaper and have your mechanic install them, 700 is ridiculous

can't find any aftermarket places in my area. my mechanic already looked. and considering my car and year had a new cat from 2002 on, none of them are really in the junkyard yet, so no dice.

my mechanic would have to order the part from the dealer regardless. there are no available cats in my area for under $601. my brother even looked in his database at Metlife Auto and Home in Rhode Island, and he couldn't find anything.

Emissions laws require it.

Which means it only matters when/if you gotta get emission tested.

Personally I'd just leave it until closer to emissions time. The longer you keep your money in your own account, the better off you are.

yeah, my mechanic said he wanted me to bring it to Subaru to make sure it was the catalytic converter, cause it would be something else... but my car is right about the mileage that would require a new cat.... 88,000.....

Huh? There is no set limit as to when a car needs a new cat. Personally, I say replace your O2 sensors, get Pep Boys or Advance to reset your CEL and see what happens.
