There are flyers everywhere, I saw a Grand Prix with a oversized poster taped to the back window on my way home from dinner. There was a poster on the pizza hut door, advanced autoparts door, etc. Full Story: OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Overland Park Police are pleading for the publics' help to find a teen-age girl who may have been kidnapped Saturday night. Eighteen-year-old Kelsey Smith hasn't been heard from since 7 p.m. Saturday night. That's when she called her parents from the Target department story behind Oak Park Mall. And it's the last place Kelsey was seen, wearing a pink tank top and black shorts. Two hours later, her car was found across the street in the Macy's parking lot. But what happened to Kelsey in between has police worried and her family frantic. She went to the Target store to pick up something for a graduation party but never made it back to her parents' house where she was supposed to meet her boyfriend at 7:20 Saturday night. "I started to get a little worried because she always calls," said her father, Greg Smith. "In fact I've been in law enforcement for 16 years, and it's been a rule in our house. If you change positions you have to call home and let us know where you're at, and she always does that. She's always been real good about that." Surveillance video showed Kelsey leaving the Target store without any problem. What's less clear is the surveillance video that shows her car, a 1987 silver Buick Regal, being dropped off at the Macy's parking lot across the street some two hours later. "It was found at Oak Park Mall, unoccupied and we're not quite sure how it got there," said Captain Tom Fredrickson of the Overland Park Police Department. "I mean she always, always, always lets us know what's going on and how -- we don't know what happened, we don't know if somebody took her, if they did I just want her back, just bring her back," Kelsey's father said. Police found Kelsey's purse in her car, but there's been no sign of her since Saturday evening. Her family is offering a $5,000 reward for her safe return. Kelsey Smith graduated from Shawnee Mission West just a few days ago. She plans to attend Kansas State University and study vet medicine. | dang dude, that's nuts That reminds me of something F'd up happening to a good friend of mine shortly after graduation. She didn't go missing, but she was in a bad wreck and ended up suffering pretty bad brain damage. We were slated to go to the same college, then suddenly she couldn't walk, feed herself, or even talk coherently. I hope the girl from your school is found ok. | ||||

"As she opened the driver's side door, the individual sprinted up behind her and pushed her into the car," Police Capt. Tom Fredrickson said. Police were working to enhance the quality of that video, which has not been released because it is so poor, Detective Matthew Bregel said. Overland Park police did release another video of Smith walking into and out of Target and of a man they called a "person of interest," Detective Bob Miller said. Police had received several tips and Miller said he was confident police would identify the person of interest Tuesday. Investigators have said they don't know if Smith was picked at random or abducted by someone she knew. About two hours after Smith disappeared, her grandparents found her gray 1987 Buick in a parking lot at a nearby mall with her purse and packages still inside. "They're starting to crumble a little bit because we're past the 48-hour window. He knows the urgency and the gravity of the situation now." It's pretty sad, I heard about it first Sunday night after work. I kinda at first figured oh we just graduated she probably went over to a friend's no one knows well and got wasted or something but now it's like uh oh somethings wrong its been a day or two.  I'll let you guys know if I learn anything more. They've been meeting in the Kmart parking lot where she was abducted and forming search groups to pass out flyers and canvas the area (family/friends), there's a facebook group and whatnot. The reward is now at $20k. get on youtube and search "Kelsey Smith Missing" and you'll get the fox news feed and the security video showing her leaving. | ||||

Thousands of kids go missing without any kind of national coverage. But I'm sure the family is glad of it. It (hopefully) can only help. | ||||

It's also sad though, because it illustrates the pathetic state of our television news media. Is this tragic? Yes, and my condolences to the family and I hope they get this guy and he's punished accordingly. Is it worthy of national attention on the scale it's receiving? No. Just like Holloway, Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole, etc.. these stories take away from time they should be spending reporting and debating and discussing things that actually matter.  | ||||
