Wheels come off McCain Campaign:

McCain Staff Tell of Upcoming Shake-UpJul 2 12:25 PM

US/Eastern
By LIZ SIDOTI
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain's campaign, trailing top Republican rivals in money and polls, is undergoing a significant reorganization with staff cuts in every department, officials with knowledge of the shake-up said Monday.

Some 50 staffers or more are being let go, and senior aides will be subject to pay cuts as the Arizona senator's campaign bows to the reality of six months of subpar fundraising, these officials said.

They spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans have not been made public. An afternoon conference call was scheduled to announce the results of second-quarter fundraising.

Once considered the front-runner for the GOP nomination, McCain came in third in the money chase behind Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani, raising $13.6 million in the first three months of the year. He is struggling to reach that total in the second financial quarter.

Officials said the fundamental leadership of the campaign will not change; Terry Nelson, a veteran of President Bush's winning 2004 campaign, will remain campaign manager but may volunteer his time instead of drawing a salary.

Nelson declined to comment, and Brian Jones, the campaign's communications director, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Casting himself as the inevitable candidate as 2006 ended, McCain built an expansive national campaign organization that melded top operatives from Bush's political team with his own base of longtime loyalists from his failed 2000 presidential run.

But the fundraising hasn't come in as planned, and the initial spending was excessive, leading the campaign to cut some consultant contracts and low-to-mid-level jobs in the spring, and revamp their finance operation.
Despite those changes, McCain's fundraising continued to lag, and his polls numbers in key states have dropped.

McCain Staff Tell of Upcoming Shake-Up

I would have to say it is over. If the Fat Lady is not singing yet she is certainly warming up! The stubborn push for this Immigration Bill along side the likes of Ted Kennedy was just about it for GOP voters. Casting yourself as "inevitable" is a mistake. Like saying you will win the football game. Hillary take note!

Good, when he flip flopped on pretty much every single thing he could possibly flip flop on in order to have a broader appeal to hardcore conservatives he lost all appeal with moderates and independents, which were really his true "base" to begin with.

Watching The Daily Show rip him a new one by showing the transformation in all its transparent glory was both hilarious and sad at the same time.

I don't have a link, it was a few weeks ago, maybe a month?

It showed a bunch of his statements from back then, and after each one was a recent statement by him that showed a complete 180 in his positions, on people like Falwell and pretty much everything else.

It's almost pathetic that he didn't realize that today's political climate would have welcomed him as a 'maverick' 'independent' who spent most of his time bashing Bush and being an alternative to the corruption, no oversight, etc, etc, of the last 7 years..

I just can't believe he thought it was a good idea to become an "establishment" and "more of the same" candidate.

What's hilarious / ironic / sad at the same times is that it's essentially been Bush both times who's completely decimated his chances at becoming the President.

In '00, all of the attacks (illegitimate black child, push polling, etc), and this time it's been McCain's own "flip flopped" loyalty to Bush's sinking ship.

It is really kind of sad. Though I do not agree with him on a lot of issues, and I think he waffles when politically beneficial, i have nothing but respect for him and can't help but hope for the best for him. Anyone who has gone through what he has, our country owes him a massive amount of gratitude.

Yeah, but we don't owe him the Presidency.

I admire his service and whatnot, but I can't really respect someone who does a complete 180 on so many issues in a matter of months as he's gearing up to run..

I'm merely pointing out that just because one person is worse than another doesn't make the other good. That's Two Wrongs Make a Right Fallacy
