The reason shit like this happens is because religious forces and homophobic conservatives make gay men feel ashamed of their sexuality. Maybe if this guy grew up in a more accepting environment, he'd be happily living with his man lover and feeling sorry for those being repressed elsewhere in the country. Instead, this guy lives a double life, pretending to be what he's told is normal, all the while sucking off strange men in public bathrooms hoping to remain hidden and anonymous.

though i agree with you for the most part, about gays made to feel ashamed, there is no excuse for this to happen in a public bathroom. 'get a room' ring a bell?

In order to get a room, you have to meet people in public to agree to get a room. Now, unless you have a perfect gaydar, how would you go about propositioning gay guys to get a room?

Would you just approach random men you find attractive and offer them sex? No, that'd be a disaster...you'd wind up propositioning straight men. You'd have to go somewhere where you know people are gay, which means a gay bar.

Obviously, a closet case public figure cannot be seen in gay bars. Of course, even if you somehow manage to discretely meet a gay man in public and agree to have sex in private, you then you have to go in and out of motel rooms.

For someone who's desperately trying to hide his homosexual romps, you can't be seen going in and out of motel or hotel rooms with some guy. It's too risky.

Given all that, casually walking into a public bathroom, taking care of business, then leaving is the least likely to expose you to being outed, especially for a public figure who people notice where ever he goes.

seriously, one can tell when another is attracted to him/her. one need not be in a special 'potential mating room'. this holds for both hetero/homosexuals.

going in/out of a hotel room with another guy is risky, while giving a blower in a public restroom isn't? there is nothing peculiar about two guys walking in/out of a hotel room. they don't even have to go in together.

It's not the same. The worst that can happen if you proposition a woman who's not into you is that she rejects you. If you're a poltician and you misjudge whether a guy is gay or even into you, then you've got a scandal on your hands-- "Multiple men report receiving homosexual indecent proposals from Rep. X, a married man."

While you can generally tell whether someone is into you, it's never 100% accurate, and adding the gay/straight element only complicates things.

If you get rooms, there are records. You have to interact with staff, who are all witnesses and can expose you later. If a nosy press member is really on your tail, he can sit outside and watch who's going in and out. Sure, if you take all precautions, you can minimize your expose, but it gets pretty complicated and risky. This is as opposed to a public restroom, where you can do whatever in a stall and no one will see you, and no one will bat and eye if two people walk in and out. there's also insulation from cameras, since people can't go photographing people inside public restrooms. There's no staff to see you, and bathrooms aren't associated with sex like getting a hotel room is.
