This country has put too much stock in thinking not only were we right, but we were better than every where else, we were the asshole who showed up to work everyday saying "I'm the greatest Fucker here!". That attitude has now fucked us over.

I think rather than being an example of intolerance this stroy shows just the opposite. Ok, so a few in the gallery made fools of themselves. Compare that to the rest of those being respectfull, at least a couple hundred of people.
Why not focus on the positive instead of the three small minded people who do NOT represent the majority present? I know it makes for better headline but once they were removed the prayer continued right?

because in the SENATE you're supposed to have respect for everyone. they people had none. they disrespected their own religion by associating their very unchristian-like actions with christianity. and Hindu? seriously? what a peaceful religion to attack as wicked.

get a clue.

Ok, you hate us and we need to be more like..... Austria? Luxembourg?

How three assholes in a peanut gallery can be proof to you how much the US sucks means you aren't thinking very clearly.

Yeah, saying a prayer is comparable to murdering people.

The tolerance in this thread is amazing

Being tolerant of intolerance isn't a virtue.

Comparing people who pray to murderers??? Ok...

I would say we are the most tolerant country in the world BECAUSE it was built on Christianity. The founding fathers knew what it was like to be persecuted because of religious intolerance and made sure it didn't happen here. Hence the whole "melting pot" that is the United States.

Mmm...mmmm. The Christian haters are going to love this post....

Yea, that's just idiotic imo. I wasn't referring specifically to his post.

Actually I would say it is because our nation was built on the enlightenment ideals, not Christianity. The history of Christianity is not a history of tolerance (the shunning of the gnostics, the Crusades, the Inquisition, etc.). And I really question your premise anyway, because this nation is pretty intolerant of non-Christian viewpoints (as a people, if not as a government).

I would say we were the first to accept all religions freely and without limit and we are probably one of the most tolerant nations on earth. You disagree?

um. yeah i do. have you lived in other countries? I would say Spain is way more tolerant of non christian religions than the US.

we might have been one of the first, but generalizing, we definitely have taken a step backwards in "tolerance" in the last few years.

Except when it comes to people with no religion at all, then Americans really get their panties in a bunch...at least in the red states.

You are wrong. I disagree completely. How many threads to you see being made here or at OT by religious people bashing atheists? About none? How many threads to you see by atheists bashing people who believe in a god? 20 a day on OT at least.

Have you seen the movie Jesus Camp? Bush's outward endorsing of evangelicalism has been seen by evangelicals as a rallying cry to try to impose their will upon the nation...

You need only look at the explosion in anti-homosexual legislation in the last 5 or 6 years to see it... Yea, there was some anti-homosexual legislation prior to the Bush administration, but it has grown enormously since he took office.
