Letter to my Counsoler v. can't spell / dropping seminar

Seminar is a class where you do homework. 75% of the time I sit around in it because I eitehr don't have homework or can't focus because it's too loud.

I am going to give my consuloler a copy of this letter, signed by both me and my father, and I believe I should be able to get out of it. (I've heard of people doing it before"

proof-read anyone?

It is my request to withdraw from Seminar. I would like to use the time as an opportunity to grow economically so I can continue my education following high school.
My experiences in Seminar my freshman and sophomore year have been less than a pleasurable homework environment. It hasn’t been horrible; however I would be able to focus a lot better in the comfort of my own room.
I feel that I would be better off being able to use my seminar time so I can head to work earlier and get off earlier to receive a better nights rest and be ready for school in the morning.
I have conveyed my thoughts with my father and he agrees that this would be best at this point in my education.

I would re write it as:

I am requesting to withdraw from Seminar. I would prefer instead to use that time an opportunity to grow economically in order to plan for my post-secondary education.

My experiences with Seminar over the past two years have proven it less than adequate for studying. I find it difficult to focus in the Seminar enviornment, and believe I will be more successful in the comfort of my own room.

If I am excused from seminar I will be able to work an earlier shift, allowing me a better nights rest that will facilitate a more productive school day.

After discussion with my father, we both agree this course of action would be best at this point in my education.
But I tend to be a bit more wordy than most people

Looks good. I'll use some of that and print it on paper and have my father sign. It should be no problem getting out of that class.

Remove this. Any reference to "comfort" or "room" will be read as "Let me out of seminar so I can go home" and not "seminar sucks ass and I don't need or want it."

BTW, it doesn't matter what you write because it will be denied. Letting you go early means they'd have to let everyone go early....then the people with seminar 1st period would want to come in late, then people who have it during the day would want to be excused for that hour............. it's going to be easier and more consistent to say no to you than to say yes to all the others.

sounds like "study period" to me, but if they call it seminar the school can list it as educational hours in their report to the state instead of free time.

nah, they've done it before. As long as they know you plan on using the time wisely, and are off campus they should do it. I've heard of people doing it before.

BTW: Seminar is 8th "block" from 1:00-2:40 on Tuesday and Thursday

let us know what happens, but I'm sticking with "there's no way they'll let you do this." You saying "I've heard of people doing it" means it doesn't happen often and I'm sure it's not as easy as writing a letter.

good luck......keep us informed.

Good luck dude. If your dad is on board with it, and you can prove you'll be using the time wisely, I think they might give it to you.

When I was in hs, showing ability to be responsible with priveleges was more important than the 'status quo', but, I don't know about your school.

Talked to the counsoler today. She said she'd be okay with it but she needs admiistrative approval so she sent me across the hall to speak with assot. principal.

He said he couldn't do it without proof of a economic struggle. The problem with that is the paper clearly states I would be working to help reduce the chance of a economic struggle in the future (saving money towards post-secondary education)

I didn't ask what would be needed to prove an economic stuggle. That's way to hard to define. We (I live with my father, parents are divorced) live our life paycheck to paycheck (I don't have much of a choice as I hardly make anything and it's used to pay my car ins, gas, food, and car payment) but my dad has $40k in the stock market (enhirited money, me and trey both know if my dad had any spare funds we'd have another car in our driveway )

Not sure where to go with it now. He said I could drop at semester. (In order for them to recieve money from the state for me I need to be a full time student 7 out of my 8 semesters)

Well, I'd do what you can to prove economic hardship. I mean, if you're living paycheck to paycheck and there's a possiblility that you're going to have a difficult time paying for college, that should be enough

Play up the fact that besides the extra money, earlier shift = more sleep = better grades, also increasing your chances for scholarships, etc..

easy fix: do a cash flow analysis. Show your finances without a job (current and future).

I'm not paying for college, my dad is and I'll be paying back the student loans. It's hard to define what an "economic hardship" is. I mean sooo many people don't own jack shit of what they have. Their cars, thier house, hell even the food they eat is on thier credit card. To me, if I have any principle that I owe intrest on I want that fixed as quick as possible.

IDK I'll look into it, maybe have my dad call asking what an economic hardship is and bitch at him and stuff.

show your current financial state (you don't have to do this explicitely, you can just project when current funds will run out, say, on X date), then start expanding into the future to show expenditures and how you'll run out of money (cost of college, living expenses, etc...)

Then say to alleviate that financial burden at X date, you can work now, make Y more money, and push that date out til X+x, which will save you a total of Z dollars. If you really want to be impressive, calculate in inflation and interest on a loan you'd have to take out on Z dollars for x time (if you PM me actual numbers you figure out, I can do all that for you)

okay so I make 7.00 hr x a average of 24 hours lately, which is about $143-144/wk after taxes.

I drive about 20mi day x 7days a week = 140 miles a week
divided by 15mpg (V8 FTMFL)
x3.00/gall = $28/wk gas

Income: 575/mo
Transportation: 112/mo
Insurance: 80/mo
Car Payment 150/mo

Remaining Balance: 333/mo

Say $10/day minimum for food x 7 days a week x 4 weeks/mo = $280

333-280 = 53/mo Saved towards college.

Not that that money is used towards college.. I save up and buy mods for my car and shit. My dads paying for my college, all except the student loan. I however would like to start saving up for a Mid - Late 90's Silverado Z71 in about 2 years that way I have something I can drive to/from college and keep the milage off my Z28. I'd be keeping it untill a year or two after college and then I want to buy a Legacy GT or 5th Gen Camaro once I've dropped some of the principle on my student loans.

Figures for college...
$600/mo = dorms + food ticket

$300/mo = 4 room apartment I'd like to move into with a buddy whos a freshman this year
$3-400/mo = food if I'd live in said 4 room apartment

And then what's k-state? 12k+year?

Not sure where to go with this.

Well, don't worry about the price of college then... show how you can make $X extra while not in that class, and how that will help you with expenses next year.

any certain format it needs to be in?

4 more hours/week = ~ $23/wk after taxes
x 4 weeks/mo = ~$98
+ 53 = 145/mo saved towards college.

98 x 9 mos left of school = 950 more saved towards college.

1300 saved towards college all together.
