An interesting bit from the article that kind of deals with what has been talked about:

The minister was deeply worried that the US military would react with deadly vengeance against Afghanistan. As he put it, al-Qaeda, the Taleban's guests, were going to destroy the guest house.

But what always bothers me with the Monday Morning Quarterback conspiracy theorists is that they look at a pile of data after the fact and whatever does not fit in a logical pattern of planning or reaction is proof of conspiracy. I know you are just asking a question, but others connect these dots as proof. The truth is people in power often do not behave in a logical way.

He denied it from September 17, 2001 until October 29, 2004. At least that's what I gather from these:

Now here's the really interesting bit-- the admission didn't come out until over 3 years later, and when it did, it was just days before the 2004 US Presidential election.

And this brings up another question...even if you buy the explanation that everyone in here has given for why Bin Laden initially denied 9/11, why did it take him 3 years to finally admit it? The Taliban were long gone by the time his admission happened. There was no one to protect anymore. He's the ultimate terrorist attention whore and he went all this time, as a hunted man, with the capability to communicate, without taking credit for the grandest terror attack of all time?!

Regarding conspiracies, yeah, I think if you sift over data enough concerning any event, you can cherry pick conspiracies. But even for someone like myself not prone to conspiracies, this bit just jumps out at me as very peculiar. If it's not a conspiracy, then it's a remarkable confluence of events which came together in such a way that it uncannily looks like someone put together a conspiracy.

The Taliban claimed responsibility on 9/11, then retracted it later that day. I recall the newscast on the radio vividly.
