anyone ever been to Playa del Carmen?

so I'm going in 3 weeks to Playa del Carmen in Mexico for my brother's wedding. Flying down with my mom and going to do the beach thing, visit the Mayan ruins and heard about some underground river thing to check out.

anyone ever been there and have any suggestions?

on the map it looks like Chichen Itza is the nearest ruins... that would be badass

all i know is there's no medical relief nearby if we fall down the steps so we have to be careful. and bring lots and lots of bottled water from the hotel.
