Children of Hurin

so I admit I'm thoroughly a LOTR geek, but I just finished this book and although it's a bit of a downer because they're cursed and all, the very last paragraph was kindof endearing.

anybody else a dork out there?

I am such a Level 33 Dungeon Master that I knew this was published in brief narrated form in some of his other books, but I had not read it myself. It is a very sad and tragic story, but it does have some great moments and fills in some early Middle Earth history.

I don't think anyone who has not read "The Lord of the Rings" can fully appreciate the films. But it is a damn long read!

And when will they film "The Hobbit?"

you're correct. it was touched upon in the Silmarillion but he had gone into detail with a bunch of other stories like the Ley of Luthien, but wrote the most on this.

I still need to read the Unfinished tales and the adventures of Tom Bombadil. read all the rest thou.

they won't unfortunately. the family isn't giving them the rights to it so no movie. plus I don't think Peter Jackson would agree to do it anyway and seeing a Tolkien story not done by a LOTR geek would not be gratifying.

i spoke too soon. i guess i was right. i knew i heard this from someone. god damnit. stupid movie bigwigs ruining it for everyone.

New Line originally planned to have Jackson take directorial control once he became available after completing his upcoming book adaption of The Lovely Bones and the currently stalled Halo project, where he is acting as executive producer. However, on November 19, 2006, the well-known Lord of the Rings fansite TheOneRing.net, which has close ties with the New Zealand filmmaker, posted an e-mail from Peter Jackson in which he stated that New Line will be finding someone else to direct The Hobbit[8]. In the e-mail Jackson and his wife Fran Walsh said New Line is actively looking to hire another film maker for the project. The demise of the partnership was due to the ongoing lawsuit with the studios over accounting practices regarding profits Jackson deemed unjust from the first film in the trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring[9]. In an unexpected move Mark Ordesky, previously the executive producer liaison between the New Zealand based production and Hollywood for the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, informed Jackson that the studio decided to move on since the lawsuit was still pending and unresolved. Time was the major factor that hastened New Line's decision to boycott Jackson and his production house Wingnut Films due to the upcoming expiration of New Line's option to make the film. This ashcan move by New Line has put the company in a bad light, since it represents a similar situation that occurred with the 1994 Fantastic Four film when the movie was produced for the sake of retaining rights but never distributed.
Tolkien fans responded quickly to the news, and many of them were not happy. These fans decried the decision, and the Sydney Morning Herald questioned if the lucrative film franchise could be successful without Jackson's creative and artistic direction[10]. An online petition was started by fans to convince the producers to bring The Hobbit to the big screen with Peter Jackson's involvement. As of May 2007 the petition contains over 60,000 signatures[11].
Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in Jackson's trilogy, expressed his disapproval of New Line's actions and claims that somehow Jackson should helm The Hobbit nonetheless[12]. Other veteran Lord of the Rings actors such as Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen have voiced their willingness to return in a Jackson-directed Hobbit, but have shown disappointment about the prospect of one without him, despite remaining silent on their involvement in such a case[13][14][15].

Well, that sucks.

Hopefully it all gets resolved and we get a kickass film out of it.

There was some problem because Newline does not own the rights to the Hobbit, but I had heard a deal was being talked about some months ago. I can't see anybody but Sir Ian as Gandalf so they need to do this while he is still around and in good health!
