tamper-resistant mechanical lock or other safety device, properly engaged so as to render such weapon inoperable by any person other than the owner or other lawfully authorized user.
I think they are talking about more than some trigger lock you could pick up at a .99 store

Nope, the cops told me trigger locks are sufficient. They are considered 'locking mechanisms'.

Not in the state, no. I purchased only one gun, in TN before I moved here. The other two were given to me.
This post got pushed to the bottom of a page, anyway:

You checked with a class/online how to handle a gun personally, but you didn't check anything on where to store them...like if you could put a gun on your backyard deck, on your lawn, in a bag in a room...you never asked anyone where and how to store a gun, even though while you were gone, the law had changed?

Did you honestly expect the MA state police to pull over anyone driving into MA a manual on how to store guns?

Also, you purchased a gun outside of your state, and brought it into MA without checking on any gun law changes...131L is a small part of a pretty significant adjustment in gun laws in 1998, you figured you could just waltz into your state with some new guns and not check where it's legal to store them...

You picked up nothing of the NRA protests?
NRA-ILA :: In The News

Also the media covered it:
In Lawrence, Massachusetts, THE EAGLE-TRIBUNE editorialized against the Bay State’s new anti-gun law, claiming its supporters are "living in a state of delusion."
The new law, according to the TRIBUNE, "requires gun owners to lock their weapons up or install trigger locks.
They face felony charges if they fail to do so.
"The law also bans the sale of certain ‘assault weapons,’ guns with high-capacity magazines and cheap handguns like the so-called ‘Saturday Night Specials.’ It makes illegal sawed-off shotguns and guns that cannot be detected by metal detectors. It prohibits those convicted of certain crimes from owning guns and imposes tougher sentences on those committing crimes with guns "It attacks law-abiding gun owners, dramatically increasing the fees on the permits required to own firearms.
"Our legislators believe that if they just pass the right mix of laws, no one will ever die, or be hurt, or be poor or suffer in any way. Too many of us have the save misguided faith.
"There is merit to some aspects of the law – making gun owners responsible for safe storage is one.
"But those who believe the new gun law means there will be no more deaths by gunfire in Massachusetts are living in a state of delusion."
Quick Shots 1998

You are pleading ignorance to all of this...you didn't contact the NRA, you didn't check out ANY MA media, you didn't ask any police officer about storage...nothing?

If it's a law, then yes, I expect the laws to be included in the manuals on gun laws, or listed online with the gun laws. So yes, I expect them to be easily seen.

I don't look to the media to search for rules or laws. I look to the guidelines of the class material and online for the rules, which is where the rules are listed. No, I didn't see this law anywhere, nor was I taught this law. Ignorance? Maybe, I'm not arguing that. The point is, I didn't know, and I did everything I knew to do to know the laws and do things legally. So I missed one.

You must realize that other people would find it hard to believe that someone politically active in gun laws/gun rights...doesn't notice when the NRA makes a big deal about a law being harmful, the media editorializes it, covers it...it's been around for about a decade...

And you simply "missed" a decade's chance to look up gun storage just once or check out the media/NRA/whatever...just once

I mean, I would be inclined to believe that my uncle who has a rifle and no access to a computer...hasn't left the state in 20+ years...isn't active in politics...never debates gun laws...doesn't keep up with any pro-gun group...

You basically fit all of the opposites of that...it just doesn't sound right to the average person

The NRA article is from 2001, well before he moved to Mass.

Which might mean something if that was the only reference the NRA ever made to MA gun [storage] laws

you're missing the fact that he moved to Mass well AFTER the gun law went into effect. he took a class regarding gun safety and ownership and that law was not included in the class. The class, according to mass state law, gave him "permission" to possess guns in massachusetts.

if completing the class allowed ballz to possess guns in the state, don't you think the class should have covered the storage law????

All the more reason he should have done personal research, and that it's likely someone like him would have...again he's not a politically secluded person, cut off from all gun related news

At least one thing we've learned from this thread, he obviously doesn't care too much about gun laws, considering he never even researched all the gun laws in his own state or looked up gun storage once in over 9 years, which everyone considers the worst gun state in the country

I imagine the course was a "gun safety" course designed to prevent accidental shootings that happen every year where a gun goes off in a public place by accident

It was not "all you need to know about guns for MA"

Kind of like in PA they have a state sponsored driving aid course, and a test...both don't cover EVERYTHING about what is legal to do, store and use your car for...and they didn't have to tell me that after I left

apparently that's all that was required to own guns in mass, was completing this course. why would you bother to go out looking for more laws that could or couldn't exist when the class is supposed to teach you everything you need to know about owning a gun in mass?

i think you're arguing for the sake of arguing, as your logic is non-existent.

You're assuming I'm 'politically active' in anything at all. I've been a poor student, and now I'm a poor postdoc who rarely watches the news on TV...I've only done so as a result of DIAC and LL. What do you expect, that I keep track of every law and every media story ever made because I'm curious? What kind of time do you have on your hands my friend?

I'm a lowly citizen who happens to own guns and has done everything I knew to do it correctly, abiding by the law as much as I knew how. I'm not sure what you're looking for dude.
