That said, ignorance is never an excuse and personal responsibility in making an effort to learn about the laws is a principle I'm sure you can get behind even while disagreeing with the law.
We have to be careful not to confuse this law as a federal or even a common law...it's not. MA is practically the only state in the country that has this law. To act like it's something that 'all gun-owners should know' or something is just plain stupid. Sure, gun-owners in MA should know the MA laws, but let's not get carried away with the 'safety' of these laws and 'responsibility' of the gun-owners in such a broad sweep. Were I in any other state, I'd be considered safe and responsible.

I'm obviously not suggesting gun owners should take the time to learn MA laws if they live elsewhere.. rather, that they should make an effort to learn any laws and regulations that do govern the storage, transportation, etc.. for wherever they live.

I understand that, but some in this thread have been making sweeping generalizations that not having a gun in a safe or locked up tightly is 'irresponsible' or 'unsafe'. The only thing even close to irresponsible in this scenario is that I was unaware of that law in this state. Other than that, such a sweeping generalization is not even the case outside of this small state.

I seriously don't think the NRA would be your advocate. They are pretty specific in their "rules" about knowing your local gun laws and being responsible by securing your firearms.

It wasn't needless. You really do need to back away from his leg and pay attention to the actual facts of the case. We KNOW you love him. We KNOW you'll say whatever needs to be said to profess your love. Get off it already.

So it is just the State and local Brownshirts we are talking about here! Perhaps if more gun owners were aware of the they would work hard to change it!

I don't know what either of you are talking about except that these laws are more constitutional because they aren't just adopted common law or federal laws

So Thorgrim, can you recite all the laws you must abide by in your state?

Or are you just, of course, applying an unjust requirement on ballz when you can't even memorize all laws which you must obey?

When you purchase a gun or start driving a car, it's almost certain you should at least brush up on the rules.

who said he had to memorize every law, and that's a fallacious argument because then people could be found not guilty on most criminal charges because they didn't know the specific law

He's a politically active person interested in gun laws, in one of the most gun-control advocating states in the country, and for over a decade while he certainly was aware gun laws were being increased and decreased, never bothered to even briefly check with a police officer, local sheriff, friendly lawyer, whatever, if there was anything different about the gun laws as he read them over 10 years ago as preparation for buying a handgun

So then you're saying people should be convicted for uncommon laws they didn't know about. They're not responsible for knowing all the laws, but they're responsible if they break one.

You seem to have a lot of personal information on Ballz... Is there something we should know about you two?
