Giuliani on HIV: It's like 9/11!

I saw a link to this story over on digg

Iowa Independent:: Rudy Giuliani: Asked About HIV, He Answers With 9/11

Here's the interesting part:

After about 10 minutes of prepared remarks, Giuliani began taking questions. Asked about increasing federal support for HIV medications, Giuliani discussed what he considers appropriate federal responsibility in health care. "I don't want to promise you the federal government will take over the role," he said, drawing applause and shouts of "all right." Then, in some interesting twists, he turned the HIV question into a 9/11 answer:

"My general experience has been that the federal government works best when it helps and assists and encourages and sets guidelines… on a state-by-state, locality-by-locality basis. It's no different from the way I look at homeland security. Maybe having been mayor of the city, I know that your first defense against terrorist attack is that local police station, or that local firehouse."
EVERYTHING goes back to 9/11 for this guy. I mean, I guess you gotta play to what makes you popular, and I guess him being mayor of NYC when 9/11 happened is his, but c'mon, HIV?!?

In the words of George Stephanopoulos, Gimme a Break.

You think saying local government is better is some 9/11 attention getter?

Sorry, I don't read it that way. I often think the United States of America works so well because we are still "States" and the State and local governments do what is needed with local knowledge and without some bureaucratic control from D.C. where they have no clue but are good at pushing paper and arbitrary rules that don't work!

That you Rudy for saying the Federal government can't and should not do EVERYTHING!

I agree that local govt's work more effectively for Americans (like, the actual people). But he used HIV to bring up 9/11? C'mon, that's asinine. He could have just said "Local governments work better for most things than the federal government can handle" or whatever.

Old and busted: bringing up 9/11 every chance you can

This is stupid, but all politicians answer questions and then spin them to their leading issue. The problem is this is all friggin Rudy talks about. I liked Rudy a lot before the primaries now I just want him to shutup already.

He took a question about HIV and answered it with an analogy to a terrorist attack. How on earth do you not see it? He could have used any number of other analogies. You call the local authorities when you get robbed/raped/assaulted/whatever. It's obviously just pure coincidence that he brought up being "mayor of the city" and "terrorist attack" in the same sentence.

He's f'ing worthless.

He answered it with an analogy of local goverment that he understood. I am not blind to the simple fact that Rudy relies on 9/11 like someone else relied on "Reporting for Duty!" But he made a valid point. Care to refute it? Or should we go back to the failed Clinton National Immunization type of thinking?

Whether he made a valid point or not isn't really relevant to the conversation. The point here is that he'll take ANYTHING and turn it into a chance to bring up 9/11 again.

Giuliani To Run For President Of 9/11

NEW YORK—At a well-attended rally in front of his new Ground Zero headquarters Monday, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani officially announced his plan to run for president of 9/11.

"My fellow citizens of 9/11, today I will make you a promise," said Giuliani during his 18-minute announcement speech in front of a charred and torn American flag. "As president of 9/11, I will usher in a bold new 9/11 for all."

If elected, Giuliani would inherit the duties of current 9/11 President George W. Bush, including making grim facial expressions, seeing the world's conflicts in terms of good and evil, and carrying a bullhorn at all state functions.

"Let us all remember how we felt on that day, with the world watching our every move, waiting on our every word," said Giuliani, flanked by several firefighters, ex-New York Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, and Judith Nathan, his third wife. "With a campaign built on traditional 9/11 values, and with the help of every citizen who believes in the 9/11 dream, I want to make 9/11 great again."

There's no greater threat to America today... than Bill Clinton 15 years ago!

I am not allowed to talk about policy in the medical area or it's failure?

That would be called learning, but when we just want to post cheap smilies to show how clever we are, well.....................

It's just funny that every time some Republican does something stupid, there's always someone (whether it be on Fox News or these forums or elsewhere) who has to bring in Bill Clinton to change the subject and divert attention

It's also funny how liberals have such a short memory. Everything is the here and now, and if you mention something that happened more than a month ago, they won't shut up about "bringing up the past".

Funny, my ex wife argued the same way.

It's pretty obvious he wasn't trying to "divert" anything and you're having a fit because of the rule that says you can't mention Clinton's name unless you're wishing he'd stain YOUR dress too.

I don't think that's the case at all, the past is fine to analyze and discuss and bring up, but when it's done to the exclusion of the actual situation being discussed it's pretty pathetic.. and it happens so routinely that it merits mention.
