Obesity Spreads Among Friends And Family

Among the findings:

The chance of a key participant becoming obese went up by 57 per cent if he or she had a close friend who became obese.

If he or she had a same sex friend who became obese, this figure went up to 71 per cent.

But no such increase in a person's chance of becoming obese was found in opposite sex friendships.

Perception of friendship was also important: when both the key participant and his or her friend said their friendship was close, the key participant's chance of becoming obese was 171 per cent if the friend became obese.

They were not likely to become obese however if only the friend claimed the friendship was close.

Among pairs of brothers and sisters, one becoming obese increased the chance of the other one becoming obese by 40 per cent.

This chance was higher among same sex siblings as opposed to opposite sex siblings.

Among married couples, the chance of a husband or wife becoming obese if the spouse became obese was increased by 37 per cent.

The spread of obesity in a social network was not dependent on geographic distance.

Social distance, the degree of separation between two people in the network, had greater influence than geographic distance.

A geographic neighbour becoming obese did not increase a key participant's chance of becoming obese.

Smoking behaviour did not affect the spread of obesity from person to person.

If this study is to be believed, the people around us affect more than we think - and since we are very social creatures obesity will become an epidemic in this nation in very short terms....

We are just picking up bad eating habits and lack of physical activity from each other. To often we get a signal in our head that the behavior of those around us somehow makes it ok. And that applies to more than just getting fat!

Serve as a forum where issues affecting fat people can be discussed in an unbiased setting.

The good thing is that it works both ways. IF your friends are losing weight it influences you to do the same.

Do not work to maintain an unnaturally low weight. Do not go on weight-loss diets or engage in compulsive or excessive exercise programs.

Avoid all discussions of "good/bad" food and being "good/bad" in relation to eating.

Do not compliment anyone for losing weight, do not criticize anyone for gaining weight.

If you struggle with body image issues, try to discuss your feelings only with close friends, family, and/or a therapist. For instance, do not complain in public that you "hate your fat thighs" or "wish you were thinner" etc. Try to learn to accept/love your body.

Wow, it seems this organization promotes an unhealthy lifestyle, its a microcosm of a bigger problem with society, the "I am perfect just the way I am, if you dont like it go fuck yourself" and no self responsibility, always blaming someone else, if they are so perfect why they blaming other people for their own condition?
