Kerry Calls Lieberman the New Cheney

In an exclusive appearance on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos", Senator John Kerry, D-Mass., blasted fellow Democrat Senator Joe Lieberman for continuing his bid in the Connecticut Senate race despite a narrow loss to newcomer challenger Ned Lamont in the Democratic primary earlier this month.

"I'm concerned that (Lieberman) is making a Republican case," Kerry told ABC News, accusing the 2000 Democratic vice presidential candidate of "adopting the rhetoric of Dick Cheney," on the issue of Iraq. Kerry continued, "Joe Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut," insisting Liberman's stance on Iraq, "shows you just why he got in trouble with the Democrats there."

Kerry called the Connecticut Senator's Independent bid a "huge mistake" and applauded businessman-turned-politician as "courageous" for challenging Lieberman on the war. Of his own views on Iraq, Kerry stated forthrightly, "The course of this country in Iraq is making the world more dangerous."

Developing...

Think this illustrates pretty well why people are frustrated with Lieberman. He sounds like a Republican with his rhetoric that's out now, and Republicans are using him to help hurt the Democrats come election time.

If Joe cared about the ability for Democrats to retake Congress and finally put a stop to the bullshit that's going on in America courtesy of Bush, he'd drop out. Hell, if he even cared about the people of CT, he'd drop out. But he doesn't, he cares about himself and his position as a Senator..

I definatley agree with your last paragraph. This whole him runing as an independent, to me, is just being a sore loser. He doesn't care about what the people want, and to me that's the first step of being a politician.

If Lamont loses, and the Dems don't get back one chamber of Congress...I think I'm going to quit politics for a few years...I'll cast a ballot in '08 but thats about it

I am not about to waste my time with the establishment Dems trying to force Lamont to lose and not being able to win elections in such an easy year, fuck politics then, I'll just check the nightly news and the daily show

I think they'll pick up the House, but Democrats should be lining up to support Lamont.. a Lamont victory and Lamont doing well in the polls will increase turnout dramatically for the elections

If it looks like he's going to be down and out come election day, I think a lot of people will wind up staying home

Here's an interesting take on it:

For the Democratic Party the Lieberman problem is a serious one. After his primary loss he has become the de facto Republican candidate, virtually endorsed by Bush, Cheney and RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, who have withdrawn support from the actual Republican candidate in the race. Lieberman can only win by securing almost all the Republican votes. His campaign must pull Republican votes to the polls, courtesy of the national GOP on which his ambition has become dependent. That can have a drastically negative effect on the Democratic campaigns in the three Connecticut congressional districts where Republican representatives are at risk. Those three seats comprise 1/5 of the total number of 15 that Democrats need to gain the House. Out of necessity Lieberman has become an active obstacle to Democratic victory and one of the key bulwarks for protecting Bush's one-party rule essential for remaining unaccountable for the rest of his presidency. For Bush, that is the importance of Lieberman.
I think that's true. Lieberman can be big for the GOP come election time.

he cares more about the country than he does his politic party, I think he is the only democrat that does it. I also believe that John McCain is the only Republican that thinks that way

I don't think that's true. You can't be doing something because you 'care about the country' when your actions run counter to everything you claim to stand for

If he is really "out of step with the people of Connecticut" then the Democrats should have nothing to worry about. He'll lose. So why keep whining about it?

How is this Lieberman's fault and how is he out of step with the people of CT when he has the majority vote?

Kerry is still full of shit. For such strong progressives you would think he would encourage independents.

I wouldn't call someone who insults their own party, works against them, and works with the opposing party to hurt your own party's chances "an indepedent"

The GOP won't endorse their own candidate, but they do publically support Lieberman and completely ignore the winner of the GOP candidate

For all intents and purposes he is the GOP candidate

But remember, he is "out of step with the people of Connecticut". Right? You have nothing to worry about! Why do you keep freaking about it?

Listen, I'm not from CT, I don't care about that, Kerry is making the simple point that SOME people are worried about change and also about not getting enough pork, Lamont already has 41% in the worst polling and thats after barely eeking out a primary win and everyone telling him he was going to get destroyed in the 3-way matchup

Why do I keep freaking out? Because Liebermans actions of working with the GOP to take down the Democrats...well it could work! The Dems could spend another 2 years in the minority while this country "stays the course" to new levels of debt, poverty, war and chaos

You'd think that if he criticized members of his own party, it should simply go to show that he's not making decisions based on party lines?

I don't know if Lieberman is out of step with the people of Connecticut. So long as the polls have him winning over Lamont, I guess he's in touch with the people. It is quite obvious, though, that he's completely out of touch with his own party, since he's now the de facto GOP candidate and he's fucking over the Democrats.

How are Lieberman and Kerry part of the same party? The Dems threw him out for not toeing the party line on Iraq.

according to the polls the state is divided, so why shouldnt he run ? It is not like the Republican candidate is suddenly going to win, so shouldnt the people of Conn have a real campaign instead of an automatic win for Lamont ?

McCain said today that he endorsed the republican candidate.

When asked if he would campaign for him, however, he said that he would not campaign against Lieberman. They were too close of friends
