This to me is, well, hilarious. This is really big news, and a fabulous example of why two-way scientific discourse is still valuable, in the same week that both Newsweek and Al Gore tried to make the case that climate skeptics were counter-productive and evil. Climate scientist Michael Mann ( ...

| Y2K bug causes NASA to revise their global warming temperatures...DOWN. This to me is, well, hilarious.
What does this tell us? Well, global warming is less and less what people think it is!

| Thats just some guys blog who is obviously one of "you people". I'm not arguing that we know everything about the climate, but I think this sort of thing detracts from the issue. They harp on one stupid factoid and call global warming off, it's ludicrous. I also think your conclusion is false. Revising all of the numbers downward does not change the trend. Shit even the data he cites still shows a sharp warming trend starting around 1970. Revising one point slightly downwards changes nothing whatsoever. Keep grasping at those straws. | ||||

I never said the whole thing is off. I never said the warming trend was false. What I do point out is that the 'warmest years on record' as everyone has claimed, people like you and AlGore, are not actually in the last decade, but in the 30s, back when people couldn't have been to blame for the warming. The fact is, the numbers and the chart so cyclical warming activity, and that's the most important issue here. Sure, it's warming, so what? It'll cool down in a decade or two. Global warming and cooling is about as regular as summer and winter, but on a larger scale. And this is not merely 'some guys' blog'. There are links all over the net, just search for them. Here's one from American Thinker. Go ahead, feel free to check out the NASA GISS website too ![]()

| You can downplay this all you want, but this was a major backbone in the arguments for AGW. | ||||

| I disagree. While the measurements had to be revised, the result shows the same trend of warming as it did before. It changes very little, if anything at all. We now have more precise measurements than we did before and still the same trends exist. If anything this helps to further our understanding of the process and it shows that the earth is warming even with new and more accurate data. | ||||

| If this had gone the other way and temperatures had increased I bet it would be front page news all over the world with a picture of a lost polar bear. Just something to think about. | ||||

A year is a measurement of human creation.
I think what I am getting at is that each individual measurement, in and of itself, is unimportant. In the context of climate change, we are more concerned with where global temperatures are going. If they revised the temps up or down, the overall trend would be the same, the trend line would simply be shifted up or down on the graph. Maybe if we were progressively measuring the temperature more and more incorrectly with each passing year than there would be a case.

| It's colder today than it was yesterday. Does that mean it's global cooling? I think you are missing the point. The earth is currently in the process of warming as can clearly be seen in the data that the author of your Blog himself uses... ![]() Whether or not 1998 was the warmest on record doesn't matter. It was one of the warmest, and as you can see in the chart from your article, the earth has steadily warmed since probably 1970 or so. | ||||
