Gee. I wonder. It will probably be something along the lines of:
" We are rightfully persuing nuclear power for civilian use. These resolutions are illegal and we will not comply. Any sanctions will be viewed as a hostile act. "
Then they will send money and weapons to hizbollah to continue thier attacks.

The response was delivered and now the bloc of nations who issued the ultimatum have to prepare a response. I figure we'll get the 'official' version of events by lunch or so.

Iran says it ready for serious nuclear talks

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Tuesday it was ready to start immediately what it called "serious" talks with six world powers about their offer to defuse Tehran's nuclear standoff with the West.

The problem is enrichment. Iran insits it is allowed under the NPT, and those opposing them insist they stop enrinchment.

I can't see how any negotiations can be successful as long as each side maintains this position.

Yes and no. It has the right so long as it provides reasonable assurances to IAEA.

The problem here is the political pressure on IAEA from the US is causing Iran to get all defensive and it is hard to tell what is genuine cocnern and reaction to the US zomgs they wan teh bomb.

They stopped cooperating with the IAEA once everyone started getting uppity with them about their programs.

Absolutely, but they only have the right to enrichment if IAEA is satisfied, otherwise they must get it done abroad.

Iran is claiming enrichment under this:

1. Nothing in this Treaty shall be interpreted as affecting the inalienable right of all the Parties to the Treaty to develop research, production and use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes without discrimination and in conformity with Articles I and II of this Treaty.
The other question is what if Iran decides to withdraw (this is allowed under the treaty) ?

The fact of the matter is they can choose to withdrawl from the treaty at any point...with no reprocussions.

I thought Iran was building reactors that would enrich uranium to a level where it's only real purpose was in Nuclear weapons? A nuclear power plant would not need the same level of enrichment and that is why everyone is getting angry?

The NPT is a paper tiger. We don't abide by it so why should anyone else? Pakistan and India aren't part of it yet they are allowed to do whatever they want. Iran could just quit and be happy.

Harvard Gazette: Iran's nuclear ambitions

Matthew Bunn, senior research associate at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, got to the heart of the disagreement when he identified the lack of "a broad and verifiable gap ... [separating] activities that can continue in Iran - and nuclear weapons capability." For example, Iran has been insisting that it be allowed to maintain 168 centrifuges to produce material for nuclear reactors. According to Bunn, there is nothing in the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - of which Iran is a signatory - that says that Iran can't have centrifuges; however, it "would be desirable to draw a broader line between what countries ordinarily do, and nuclear weapons capability." The problem with the centrifuges, said Bunn, is that they can be switched very quickly from producing uranium for nuclear power plants to producing material for nuclear weapons.
IT was my understanding that such enrichment activities are not really needed if your only goal is to produce nuclear power.

WHO determines WHAT a country NEEDS? The country itself or OTHER countries? They are trying to dictate HOW Iran operates its nuclear program. You think the US should listen when other countries tell it how to act? Tell it how policy should be? The fact of the matter is the centrifuges that Iran has can NOT produce the % of enrichment needed to produce nuclear weapons. I believe high 90 percentile is needed. They are able to MAYBE get 15%.
