Beer crew, assemble! v.CentralMarket

Yesterday Sheana and I went to Central Market (Central Market ... for those of you that don't know what it is) to get some nice fresh produce and meats for her to make me a delicious birthday dinner tonight. While we were there we wandered through their huge beer and wine section, and I picked up an ale.

I don't typically drink dark brews, but this was delicious. It was a Young's Double Chocolate Stout Ale. Pouring it into the glass it was pretty much completely black and even the head was a really dark mocha color, no doubt as a result of the mixture of chocolate malt and actually dark chocolate infused into the beer. When I took a drink it was fairly bitter as it hit the tongue, but then it quickly faded into a soft dark chocolate flavor with a hint of coffee flavor as well.

I was very surprised by the depth of flavor, if only for no other reason than I've never tasted that much depth of flavor in a beer before.

Less than $3 for a full pint bottle of it too, which was pretty cheap compared to some of the other beers they had.

I know Ardent created a beer thread a while back that got good reception, so I thought you might find this experience interesting.

If you like that one, you'd probably like a vanilla porter. Not as bitter, add a hint of vanilla, a little less aggressive on the chocolate side, with a hint of coffee flavor.

I have been a fan of the IPA's lately. Red Hook's "Long Hammer" IPA or Breckenridge 471 Small batch IPA have been the two i have been enjoying lately.

If its hot out a leinenkugel summer shandy is pretty good. It tastes a lot like a lemonade. Their honey weiss and sunset wheat is decent too.

If I am looking to get drunk i just stick with regular old budweiser.

I'll have to try to find that one. I do like Stouts. Guinness is an obvious choice, but I really hope to actually taste it in Ireland sometime soon. We recently went to a chain restaurant/brewery, Rock Bottom Brewery, and I tried their stout which was really good.

I've really been into Wheat Beers lately like Hefewizens and Belgian Whites. It's probably because it's been so hot lately... wheat beers are generally the most refreshing beers, although they got some weight to them.

I also bought a half-pound of Bolivian coffee, freshly ground when I purchased it. Beats the crap out of work's coffee, and might actually be on par with the Finnish blend I've been drinking.

I'd be scared to see the caloric content of this beer. I hadn't eaten very much yesterday when I drank it, just a small BBQ sandwich at like 11am for lunch and a few samples of bread and deli meats at Central Market. I was hungry when I started drinking it, I felt full when I was done.

I don't often have the problem. I see stouts and really dark, malty ales as a pre-dinner or post-dinner drink. At the afore mentioned Rock Bottom Brewery, I started with the stout, and had a hefewizen with dinner itself. Of course, I haven't tried the Young's yet, so it might very well be a heavier stout than the one I had... now that I think about it, Guinness is heavier than the one I had, so it might have just been on the light side.

been to the guiness brewery twice. it's the same really, not much of a difference as they ship guiness with such high standards the quality is preserved unlike other imports.

That's funny... I've read the quality of Guinness really varies from location to location. My wife had Guinness in Ireland and said she liked it, but doesn't much care for it here.

i'm not much of a guiness drinker, but I worked in an irish pub in germany, guiness tasted the same there, drank it in ireland, and at the brewery twice, had it here on st patty's day and other days... tastes about the same. although having in beantown it could be fresher considering how many OTBers there are here and it is an "irish" town.....

but my old boss at the irish pub in Germany said the taste is usually consistently maintained because of the high standards of transportation of guiness....

Hmm, dunno. I've been doing Hoegaarden and Blue Moon for Belgian Whites, and there's one at a pub I go to that starts with an E, and then a few different microbrews I've been getting for Hefe's.

Is that a good one? I'll look for it.

I'm headed to the liquor store to get some Young's at Pub's suggestion this evening, but I'm certainly not against getting a good hefe also if you're suggesting that one I don't like drinking stouts with dinner anyway.

If you are looking at a store it will be in an enclosed box, and not your traditional 6 pack holder. It will say WHEAT fairly decent sized on the box.

I dont usually like dark beers like stout ales, and I certainly enjoyed this one. If you like stouts to begin with, I imagine it's probably even better.

They didn't have it at my liquor store

Instead I got a Flying Dog Imperial Porter and the Shiner Hefewizen.

I was sad I couldn't find the Young's, but the Flying Dog is pretty good. The Shiner is great.

i really like the shiner hefeweizen

yea, Young's is an import from England so I wouldnt be surprised if you have to go to a specialty store to get it ... Central Market is very much like a specialty megamart.
